I am looking to get a new receiver to replace and old crapy pioneer. I have a HD DVR from bright house,Sony DVD recorder/player(not HD or Blue ray) and a Sony HD 50 something TV. For speakers I am using a couple of year old Bose maybe accumass 301 home theater in a box type speakers the ones that are about 3 1/2 inches with a powered sub(5.1).

I would like to spend $300.00 or under. I have narrowed it down to the following 3 companies. Yamaha,Denon, and Harmon Kardon. The Den and the Yam make a couple of systems that come with the mike that will auto set up your speakers which may be the best for me because i dont know much about all this stuff and that out room is not square and some of the speaker are closer than the others.

Does any one have any thoughts or good or bad expirences with any of these companies? Also where is the best place to buy recievers? In a store or on the internet?

Thanks for any help.

You aren't going to go wrong with any one of those brands. I had a Yamaha for years and it operated flawlessly.....wish I would have never got rid of it. Just make sure it has the features you want (5.1, etc.) and has enough connections on the back to connect all of your components.

Denon makes good entry-level equipment. I have an AVR-1905 and it does the job well. Remember, if you check out Sony's "ES" line, they come with a 5-year warranty. But I think they might be pricier than $300.

Thanks I was kind of leaning towards the Yam, but the HK is the only one that has the HD connections. Are the HD connections a must have?

All three companies make good receivers. I would pick a Denon or Yammy over a HK. I'm sure they all have pretty much the same features. It would come down to warranty, price and personal preference. You can find stuff usually a lot cheaper online, but be careful. If they are not an authorized dealer, the manufacturer will not honor the warranty. Check out J&R.com. Find what you like and call them. They will usually give you better pricing over the phone. They are authorized as well, so your warranty will be valid.

:whs: Great site for info......hope you have about a month to read though! There is a ton of info on that site. The great thing about it, is there are usually "official" threads for different models of receivers that have a lot of info about that model. Happy hunting!
