Hello everyone. My wife and I want a tonneau cover for our truck. The idea is not for security but rather to keep items out of the weather. We use the bed for hauling feed and mucking on the farm. We are looking into roll up covers because of their cost and they allow full bed access. They sell expensive cleaners and protectants, but are they nessary or are they marketing hype? What items can safely be used to clean and protect a roll up cover? The Truxedo brand says to not use silicone products.

Thank you very much for the reply. I am certainly not against buying a kit like this, but can cleaning and protecting be done without buying another $35 kit? What other items can you use that I may already have? What are safe alternatives to the $35 kit?

I use the 303 Aerospace Protectant every couple of months and it works great, used it years ago on the vinyl cover I had on a previous truck.
303 Aerospace Protectant 32 oz.
It has been a recommended product by many companies which need the UV protection (like kayaks).

It's been a few years, but I've always had Truxedo Low Profile Tonneau covers on my trucks. I've tested a bunch of products over the years on them and the best combo was Amazing Roll-Off and Vinylex Marine & RV Protectant.
Spray on Amazing Roll Off and watch the dirt roll off!

Many manufacturers recommend 303 Aerospace for their products - sun umbrellas, vinyl tops, etc.
Straight from the 303 Aerospace product pages ...

It looks to be vinyl. If so, a good wash with soap and water and a soft bristle brush and some OTC vinyl protectant from Meguiars or Mothers. Cheap way to do it.
If it’s for utilitarian purpose and you use your truck for a truck.
If it’s to keep her Purdy the 303 products I’ve used have been good stuff.

Thank you very much. The idea is to keep the truck and cover clean and protected. I am more concerned with protection and function compared to pretty and shiny. The cover is for a daily driver and working farm truck, not a mall crawler.

303 works excellent and provides UV protection. In a pinch you can also use foaming tire foam. Not the high gloss that will attract dust and dirt but the white foaming tire stuff. Any brand just spray on and wipe off to get a clean consistant finish. Good luck just my $0.02
