How do I layer waxes?

So my wax collection grew a little bigger today, though it's all still Meguiar's.

I've been using NXT since I got my car. Today everything Meguiar's was on sale at Target, so I basically cleaned out the whole shelf.

I got a couple Gold Class, both liquid and paste, and some Black wax.

How would I go upon layering it?

Black wax, NXT then gold class? Or Black, Gold, NXT? Or is three layers too much?

I would just pick one wax and put 2 layers on.

You could section off the car into thirds and use each 2 coats per section and see which you like best.

There really isn't much point to layering different waxes. That being said, I don't think Meg's makes a product I would call a "wax". I think they are all sealants, with the Black Wax being and AIO sealant or hybrid wax.

Usually, you would apply a pure sealant, something like NXT. then you would top it with a paste wax, usually a non hybrid wax like Pinnacle Souverän.

You can also "layer" a single type of wax on top of itself. However, after the second or third "layer" your getting no benefit and may actually be thinning your wax layer. Your not actually creating layers, but, just increasing the coverage when you do this.

All this being said, from what you got, I would use the Black Wax first, as it's an AIO or "cleaner wax", then you can top it with another product that's not an AIO.

In reality, you may not get much benefit - but it won't hurt anything either.

The Black Wax should fill in some of the swirls right?

Then if I layer it with NXT, would the swirls stay filled?

Probably. If the solvents in NXT don't remove it. But I didn't think Black Wax filled much. I thought it was a cleaner wax with light abrasives. I would tend to want to top it with something that is a paste. It looks like you got Gold Class Paste. Is that a cleaner wax ???

You got a lot of stuff, but also it seems like some redundant products. If it was me, I would have just got the Black Wax, and picked up some Mother's Carnauba Paste to top it with - assuming all OTC products.

I guess so, but at $2-$3 a wax, I couldn't resist.

And I do not believe it is abrasive. It's a carnauba wax. Is there any difference between the paste and liquid, even though they're both gold class?

The Black Wax has light abrasives. That's not a bad thing. The White Wax has chemical cleaners.

I meant the Gold Class. Sorry if I wasn't being specific.

Well....

You could go this way...

Black wax as it's a cleaner AIO wax.

NXT 2.0 as it's a sealant.

Wait 12 to 24 hours...

2nd coat of NXT 2.0

Wait 12 to 24 Hours

Top it with the Gold Class.

Just curious. Do I need to wash the car again to put on my second coat?

Why not give the M26 Hi-Tech Paste Wax; and/or the G70 Gold Class Carnauba Paste Wax:
A layering-chance utilizing the "spit-shining method"?

:)

M26 used to be my go to LSP back in the day. :xyxthumbs:

What is the time frame of putting on another coat?

I want to use the black wax and NXT in the same day then the Gold class maybe a week after. Would that be acceptable?

Collinite will layer if you have a warm garage to work in.
I've layered Collinite in many random environs that have served as the backgrounds:
Surrounding many, many different vehicles over the years.

This seems a little harsh, given that the OP is excited about his bargain purchases. While I understand the diminishing returns implied above, I am also guilty of "layering", mostly because I get great enjoyment out of the process. To me, that's worth the minimal cost of excess product applied.

OP, go nuts!
