How do you protect this part of your car.


If you open your drivers side car door, before you get in, look down. That black plastic strip that lines the bottom of the car door where peoples feet usually scrape ... how can you prevent this from getting messed up?


Also, when you are getting out of the car, the black plastic on the door panel usually where there is a speaker or cubby is prone to getting foot scratches. Any thoughts on protecting this?

Seems like a good spot to place a thin sheet of clear vinyl

I think we're talking about the,

Door sill


My best recommendation is to not drag your feet/shoes across this area as a "best habit".

I know I practice this as does my wife for her Mercedes-Benz as it has a stainless steel and plastic door sill. We practice the same for our Lexus SUV.

Once these area are scratched or dented they are all but impossible to restore to "like-new" appearance due to the materials and surface textures involved. Replacement is faster and cheaper and then your back to how to the "prevention" aspect, i.e. Catch-22


Another idea would be to "be the guy" that invented door sill protectors.

I think the two best options product wise would be

1) whatever material those stickers are that go on car windows that go on and off and back on without sticky residue. I think they are vinyl stickers. A small strip of this over the "door kickers". Think of it like a "door kicker bra" ... also a small strip where peoples feet hit coming out the car on the door panel. And, if you have a key start ignition, around they key hole. "steering column bra"

2) a long strip of plastic that spans onto the cars body and connects via plastic dipped neodymium magnets.

Either way, knowing the dimensions of that "door kicker" is the hard part.

I think i'm going to try a strip of 'cling wrap' that you buy at the grocery store and see how long that holds on.
 
also one problem with referring to them as door seals is that everything you search for comes back with the rubber seals around the door frame. I've searched a lot without any luck. Im surprised no one makes something for this.

My new car already has a few chips there from people getting in so I picked up a strip of clear xpel vinyl and wrapped them so it won't happen again. The stuff is really easy to use and you can't see it unless you are looking for it. I think I paid $20 for a 2 in wide couple ft long strip.
 
To paraphrase what MP says, just don't drag your shoes/boots/sandals/or any footwear across the sills.

If we can condition ourselves not to instill swirls in our paint by the numerous methods and products offered on this fine forum, then we can surely condition ourselves to be mindful of our foot placement upon entry/exit of our vehicles.

Seems like you could use clear bra or clear car wrap material pretty easily and inexpensively if you were so inclined.

You can clean any scuffs off those plastic panels with a Magic Eraser, then follow it up with a trim coating like Solution Finish.

The plastic panels on my door sills are 20+ yrs. old but they look brand new.

You can coat the pedals while you’re at it.

I don't know if this would be considered an 'acceptable' solution to all, but it seems to me that spraying a few coats of clear Plasti-Dip or Armor-All's "Custom Shield" over a door sill in good condition, or spraying a few coats of black Plasti-Dip over a worn-out door sill might do the trick. The clear would give a good one a few layers of protection, and the black would potentially 'even out' a rough one.
