How is this forum useable now?!

Oh, I see. As far as I can tell, we are a closed ecosystem here, no new members are being approved, no lost passwords being reset. It may be that there is no spam here because no new spammers can join. There is a spammer over on Autopia, but the remaining moderator no longer has the privileges to ban him, so he can only delete the spam posts as the spammer creates them.
That's a bummer.

Are we just old school now? Are there any other forums with the original traffic of AG or Autopia?

Or is it just Reddit and Discords nowadays?

I'm on another forum that only has about 15 regular contributors and almost half of them are moderators, and mostly they have to moderate each other. I mean they really rip into each other, regularly splitting each other's threads if they go off topic for even just a few posts. It often reminds me of the Monty Python sketch, "is this the 5 minute argument or the full half hour".

Sorry about the delay, but here we go:

  1. Open Firefox and press Alt to show the top menu, then click on Help → More Troubleshooting Information
  2. Click the Open Folder button beside the Profile Folder entry
  3. Create a folder named chrome in the directory that opens
  4. In the chrome folder, place a copy of the userContent.txt file attached to this post
  5. Rename the newly copied file with a .css extension (should be userContent.css after you are done. NOTE: if you don't see the filename extension, click the View menu in File Explorer, then check the File Name Extensions option)
  6. Open another tab in Firefox, go to about:config, and set toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets preference to true.
  7. Restart Firefox.

Yes...forums are dead. Apparently starting a thread, etc., is too much of an investment in today's instant gratification world. Apparently (since forums are dead) that's the reason there is no M37 forum.

I've noted before that the threads that keep going here are the ones that are similar to a Facebook timeline (not that I know anything about Facebook), "what did you do today detailing related", "what did you do today non-detailing related", "post a picture of your ride as it sits", "post your beading shots", and a couple of food threads.

They used to talk about changes to our brain, and I'm not sure that isn't happening, that reduced attention span driven by our modern world fuels that shift away from forums to more RIGHT NOW mediums. Another thing is the studies that were done 50-60 years ago that "TV" was a better way to penetrate the viewer's consciousness than "newspapers" which leads us to the current YouTube vs. Forum age, perhaps.

Attention span issues, try watching a film from 20 or 30 years ago, they seem so slow compared to the latest stuff. The average shot length in films has dropped from over 10 seconds to under 4, although this can vary depending on film genre, with horror films favouring longer shots.

There's a thing called second screening as well, which is basically while watching something on tv you have your phone going as a second screen, watching or reading something else, this happens to me while watching sports on tv I find.

I hadn't been to this forum in a very long time (7 or 8 years), and was very surprised to see what it has become. This and Autopia forum were my 2 sources of everything detailing. I generally don't rely on FB for actual reliable information, but that seems to be the future. Reddit isn't terrible, seems to be better information there than FB (as long as you don't venture outside mostly DIY subreds...beware the politics...)

Discord is a decent source, Im in one detailing server that seems to be pretty knowledgeable. They do love their Autoality memberships...

But the biggest shell shock when I came back is that AG doesn't have 8 bajillion products anymore. I remember spamming the site for the BOGO Fridays, etc. Now the sources seem to be Detailed Image, Autoality (with or without membership) and maybe Amazon. The recent 30% off 300+ caused me to buy too much at AG, though!

I don't even seem to get the AG sale emails anymore, and they certainly don't come on the forum to promote them.

I didnt get emails either...just happened to hit the store after the forum one day and saw the banner.

Gearing up to detail our new car and my son's new truck, so I needed a bunch of stuff anyway. Oddly enough, the Autoality membership cost ($50) may have been the better play, but you can't see the member-only prices without having the membership first. I kinda thought it was a scam at first but they are active in Discord so I assume they are on the up-and-up.

There are people here who have the membership and say it is great.

Yep I regret not signing up for it first. Not a whole lot of point to do so at this time, other than just to see what the prices would have been and to have buyers remorse.

I have visited reddit and many are people looking for help on paint or trim problems. Many are beyond simple correction to fix.
