I am planning to get the PC 7424XP. How many pads is enough to use on one car, or does it vary according to the size of the car. Since I am a beginner, I will use it for polish and wax. I was thinking about getting 2 each of LC CCS 5.5" orange/white/gray. Is that enough coverage?

2 pads of each is enough, as long as you clean it up after each section (not just after each panel). Some people may tell you "get 4 or 5", but if you clean them up oftem, you can easily do the entire car with only 2 pads on each step.

Get the Griots DA polisher instead, more power and better correction than the PCxp (I own both)

5.5" pads are the ideal size.

For each step on a vehicle i like to use 1 pad for two panels then switch to new one. It really helps to divide your car into sections and then go from there. Also using clean pads often will save you time and product.

I have to take a look at the Griots DA polisher. I'm trying to plan out how to work the pads, and when to clean them "on the fly". With my luck, I won't clean them properly and I'll end up doing more harm than good.:doh:

You won't necessarily do more harm than good, but you will lose cutting ability if you don't keep the pad clean. I can do a car with two pads, one for each side.

Griots makes 2 da polishers, a small one and a "normal" size one. Hes refering to the normal one.

Yes, the 6" model, but you'll have to replace the backing plate to accept 5.5" pads, they work better with free spindle DA polishers (that's why you never buy a 6" pre-made kit, always setup your own).

The 3" model is very underpowered, only good for sanding, nothing else.

You can wash pads and dry them pretty fast if you dry them with a fan. I use a Wind Machine that you can tilt the fan facing upwards, then lay the pad on it with a weight to dry. They dry within a half hour.

The number and types of pads depends on what condition the paint is in even more than the vehicle size. I prefer MF cuttinng pads and foam finishing pads. Get the Megs 5" BP 4 cutting pads and 2 to 4 finishing pads. If you want to cut with foam, the HydroTech Tangerine and maybe 1 Cyan for nasty spots will go a long way. IME the tangerine cut like orange and finish like white.

I dove in and got the GG 6" polisher with the LC 5" backing plate and the 5.5" LC Flat Pad 6-pack: 2 Orange, 2 Black and 2 White. I hope this is good enough to get me started, and then move up from there. :pc7424:
