How To Protect Steering Wheel?

Hello Everybody,

So I'm going to take delivery of my new 2016 VW Golf R hopefully this weekend and plan on giving it a full detail (Already told the dealer not to touch the car) I currently have a 2007 VW Golf GTI and I can see the steering wheel starting to loose its colour especially in areas that I hold the wheel the most in.

I'm wondering if there is something I can protect it with and now make it slippery or oily?

I use Ultimate Interior Guard Plus. Does not make it slick or greasy at all. And I also use a sunshade in my windshield when the car is parked to keep the sun off my steering wheel and dash (and keep my car a little cooler).
 
I find that using wheelskins is one of the
best ways to protect steering-wheels.

I clean with 114 then use leather masters or zaino leather in a bottle
 
Griot's Garage sells quality leather products that clean and protect very well, been using their products since 2005. They do sell a spray on leather conditioner but I would use that for maintainence but their leather conditioner is great, smells like they melted a baseball glove into the bottle.

I don't feel you can go wrong with Griots!!
 
I wouldn't put anything on it.just keep it clean with warm water on a very soft microfiber and don't rub it clean hard.on a new car depending on the individual,keep it natural until about the 3rd year then maybe apply some conditioner to the leather and such when you see the interior needs a little help to conceal scuffs and such especially on black interiors.putting conditioner on a steering wheel won't prevent the color from fading as you are touching the wheel everyday.a lot of the conditioners leave the wheel tacky that you really don't see and feel making the wheel more prone for embedded dirt and oils from your skin.
