How to remove a sag or run in paint by Mike Phillips

This is a run in the paint, also called a paint sag

A run also called a sag in paint is when the painter sprays too much paint in one area causing an abundance of paint to build up to the point where it flows together downward on the panel causing what is called a run or a sag in the paint.

Even the best painters in the world can accidently get a run or sag in the paint. Here's how to remove a run/sag.

First you'll need a Meguiar's Unigrit Sanding Block. For most people, a #2000 grit block will work find and keep you safe.

Prep all the edges by lightly sanding them with a piece of sand paper, this includes the corners. This will prevent you from gouging the paint.

How to use Meguiar's Unigrit Sanding Blocks to remove runs and dirt nibs in paint

Soak the sanding block in water until it sinks. Usually overnight is a good ideal This means it has completely saturated with water and is ready to use.

Next, Spray some water with a little soap onto the paint to lubricate the sanding process. Hold the long narrow end of the block against the sag and carefully move the block lengthwise over the sag. Be careful to keep the flat surface of the sanding block flat against the paint. The idea and goal is to ONLY sand on the top of the sag which by definition is protruding out further away from the rest of the surface of the panel.

Sand or block the sag for a few passes and then wipe off the residue and inspect. As you work the sag down the surface of the sag will become even with the surface of the surrounding paint.

Here's my friend Craig blocking out or sanding down the sag in this 1929 Model A Sedan Delivery with a fresh custom paint job.

After sanding the sag flat and the rest of the panel to remove orange peel here's what the area looks like. The surface is now completely flat.

Then after buffing out the sanding marks and polishing the paint to a high gloss the sag can no longer bee seen.
