These wheels are painted/clear coated. I clean these wheels religously. ONR + Spray Wax while drying. Over the past 6 months this staining seems to be getting worse. See it on 3 of my wheels. Tried a little polish/rubbing compound with no luck. Didn't want to try anything further until I figure out what is going on. Feels smooth to the touch.

Use an iron remover or a bleeding wheel cleaner or another acid wheel cleaner. That is most likely imbedded brake dust. If it's still there do a couple of applications and let it dwell but not dry. If there still is some black spots left they are tar and a tar remover to get it of. After a while you get build up brake dust if not useing a dedicated wheel cleaner sometimes. If it has went to far a clay good fix it also and you can use that even now if you have one. But it's prefered to desolve it before claying.

ONR is not aggressive enough to remove baked on debris. A deeper clean once in a while is necessary. SWETM has good advice.

Thanks to both. I will try some Iron X to see how well it cleans it up.

Try some color changing wheel cleaner first, its cheaper and basically does the same thing. Lots of choices, even Jay Leno Garage has some, Meguiars has a new one, etc.

What is the vehicle make and model?

PS, I'm pretty sure Ironx won't fix that.

I'll fill you in once I hear back from you on make and model of the vehicle.

Hard to tell from the pic, but I have seen some transparently thin paint on wheels in certain spots.

I have found this to be thin paint worn by sand and brake dust. Sonax color changing did not bleed, compound, and clay no improvement. The wheels were on Nissan Rouge 2016, Murano 2015, Versa 2016. They still cleaned up well just thin paint I guess.

I agree. IronX has about the same chance of getting rid of that as clay does of removing transfer.. Slim to none.
IME once wheels become embedded like that it’s on there for good.

Not IronX try Mckee's foaming gel wheel cleaner its probably the best Ive used. I bought a gallon. I'll try to post my before and after pic later it's unbelievable. As others have said you have to use a real wheel cleaner every couple months or so. A waterless wash is not strong enough to remove break dust

This is after it sitting on there for a couple minutes

Sorry about the giant pictures

Yup, why did I know that...............

Because I have a 2015 Nissan Rogue and all 4 of my wheels are way worse than that.

I know for a fact they didn't look like that when I drove it off the lot.

That being said, no cleaner, polish etc will fix it. I beleive it's defective manufacturing.

If it's like others think that it's clearcoat failure of some kind or it's have been so thin that it's has changed color. Then I would use ironx to start with. Since high alkaline wheel cleaner or acid cleaner can stain bare aluminum. A ph neutral wheel cleaner will work also. Or has anyone else recommendation to help him find out which it is?

If that was my car and the problem is the paint like custom says I wouldn't be afraid to hit that area with some type of touch up paint. Maybe even a spray just in that spot

Sorry for the delay. 11 Mustang GT Premium

Update

Washed and dried wheel. Applied Iron X. Waited 5 minutes. This was the result. I obviously keep these wheels pretty clean. Original Spots still remain.

IronX is only good for cleaning stuff you can’t actually see.. But when it comes to visual dirt & brake dust, you’ll never see it or any other color changing wheel cleaner somehow do a better job than a normL non color changing wheel cleaner.

Btw thanks for the update.
