A year ago I had my Toyota RAV4 'detailed' by a local car wash outfit but the hood and roof became hazy within a week. Many say it looks like oxidation but you I can scratch off white stuff with my finger nail so I believe it is wax.

Pic of hood below.

Any ideas on how to remove the wax buildup and restore finish?

Here's the actual picture...

The smeary areas look like wax residue...

It kind of looks like clearcoat failure to me... that is the entire hood and even the roof line above the windshield look dull and flat and are turning white or opaque and that's a sign of clearcoat failure.

Does the roof look like the paints in the same condition as the hood?
(Besides where the wax residue is)

What's the story on this car? Alway parked outside?

Do you own any compounds, polishes or paint cleaners?

What you need to do is get a paint cleaner and "TEST" the paint to see if it can be restored. IF it's clear coat failure then it cannot be fixed. IF it's just topical oxidation then it can probably be fixed.

In this thread I show a simple system for restoring paint by hand...

How to clay, clean and wax paint by hand with Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion and Pinnacle Signature Series II Carnauba Paste Wax

In the above article I used Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion to pre-clean the paint. Paintwork Cleansing Lotion is a light paint cleaner and polish, this is the type of product that you need to get and use to test the paint to see if it can be saved.

A paint cleaner will remove the old wax while it's removing any other topical staining or oxidation and restore a clear finish if possible.

If the clear coat is failing then applying a paint cleaner might help but won't stop the problem.
