I am so tired. I was up until almost 2 am trying to be the first to sign up for an interview slot through my schools career resources center. The action never opened up to allow me to complete the task. So I got up at 7, thinking maybe it didn't start until normal business hours. NOPE, every single interview time slot was taken. So I am so pi$$ed right now, I basically stayed up until 2 and got up at 6:30 for nothing.......I guess maybe I am just not cut out to get a job. I have been trying for over a year. Anyways, thanks for letting me yell a little bit.

Man, sorry to here that. What field are you trying to find a job in? Is this a permanent one or just for while you are in school?

I just graduated in December and got my Masters in Mechanical Engineering. This would have been a permanent position with a very good company. I can't believe it, and what is worse is I know half of the kids that took interviews won't even show up. They just do it so others cannot have the spot.

Hang in there Lone_Star. When something happens like that it's good to look at it like is was not ment to be. Something else will turn up.

If you really want a shot, and you know some won't show up, get ready for the interview and show up in the morning, and just tell them that you are ready if someone doesn't show. You never know!

Gary you sound like my dad. LOL. I know, I am trying to think all these nice thoughts, but I have been looking for well over a year now. It gets so frustrating to bust your arse through school and end up in a lousy job not using my degree. I guess it would be easier to swollow if I got more interview possibilities. Maybe I should just move to Florida and pan handle for AG supplies.

Grimm, I thought about that, but I work full time currently. I guess I could try though.

Are you willing to re-locate? After I finished school I had to leave my home turf for a couple years until I got some experience. Then I went back home.

Just a thought.

Yup, no problems with relocating. I moved most of my life as a kid, so no worries relocating. I am going to try and talk to the recruiter and see if I can sub in if somebody doesn't show up. Thats what the career resource center recommended.

Masters in Mechanical Engineering huh ever think about talking to a Air Force recruiter? See what they have to offer, you may just find what you are looking for in the military. They have civilian jobs as well as active or reserve.

Wystang. I thought of the AF briefly, but didn't want to go through basic. Not only that I also have a chronic illnes so I didn't think they would take me.

Very common... 8 times out of 10, you will most likely not use the degree you originally went for.

I know a girl who got a PhD in Phycology (sp?), and she's living at home, trying to find a job! I also know many people who aren't using their degree in the field they are in now. She could easily make 100k a year, but if you can't find the work, the degree isn't worth much.

Have you considered re-locating? There's plenty of jobs out there, and sometime limiting yourself to one town/city can be hard.

nick,
I have no problem relocating. And actually like moving to different places. The engineering market for anything other then oil is pretty tough to break into. A friend of mine was denied a job because he had 2 1/2 years of experience, they said too much experience. I was just denied a job because I had too liitle experience at 1 1/2 years. I guess its true, its not what you know but who you know.

They have civilian jobs...

are said such jobs on their website? Do the civilian jobs get the great retirement that the inlisted get? I am guessing I should just search the AF website. Do you have any relation to the AF?

My wife is a Load Master on the C17 and loves her job. The benifets(sp?) are awesome (ative duty), I've had friends back in south Fl that worked on the AF base in civilian jobs and they made good money as well. Search there website for job info.

I work for the AF as a civillian and the benefits are awesome and pay is decent. Mike...

Lone Star I sent you a PM with a link for job listings in the government. Mike...

Networking is key. Internships in college are a MUST when working for a larger company, or starting your own.

How do you get denied for having TO much experience? That's a little odd.

Mike,
thanks for the link. I will definitely look into it. I am trying to get the contact info for the recruiter to see if I can fill in if somebody doesn't show up.

Nick, they wanted somebody that had no experience so they could train them to think the way they wanted things done.
