i look for the section " how to not make money detailing cars" but i didn`t found it :)
so here we go with the story.

i work for Mr Shark once , i remove a scuff with a good deal cause it was an add on to the day, and took a few minutes, so it worth it.
well Mr Shark ask me to meet him for an chat about business.
deal , we arrange a day and we meet.
he is an old shark , he states that he is well known with a lot of friends and he can bring me clients, but he wants profit , so.. we discuss what options we have.

me , i offer an 5%-10%to him , from any first client package i sell tru him. now him ..he wants that % everytime i detail for his clients and in case this clients recomand me he still wants the % for the clients friends ..??!
i didn`t dig that , than he bring another option... to "invest" in my business and be 50/50 :)) , for the record i don`t think he can shovel more than a few thousands , and he expects to be business partners 50-50....
he mention that he has to invest in drinks and food when he mets his friends, so he needs a profit... :))
that was my entertainment for the day , i didn`t sign anything , and is no way i will take a partner without seeing a profit in it. and i will not pay anyone for any pyramid scam he try to set-up...

it surprise me to see how far people go for their interest...

Good thing you didn't take the deal. I am still learning the business side, but I even know this sounds ridiculous.

Thanks for sharing, someone might learn from this Cosmin.

You're too good at what you do to even entertain such an absurd offer!

I actually do something similar with business accounts.

If an account gets me another account he get 5-10% profit from every car the new account gets me.

We worth it for me.

Essential you car paying him to be you sales rep.

Ya I don't see a problem with the 5% everytime you work on people he refers to you either, it's like having a sales rep that works only on commission. But from the posts I have seen from you in the past, you seems to have no problems getting work to do, so if your Schedule is already booked, then it makes no sense to do a deal like that. On the other hand for a detailler seeking work, you get someone to sell services for you for a mere 5%, I think that is a great deal.

Just from a logistics standpoint, if you agreed to his deal, how would you keep track of all the % owed on the recurrent customers which he was instrumental in bringing to your business...... and who puts a value on the return business (since they become regular as a result of your work and not his)......

That guy is a slick one!

Thanks for the laugh :)

I would just take it as a complement. He sees that you are very good at what you do and the only thing you are lacking is a customer base. So he is trying to take advantage of the situation.
If he can help grow your customer base then maybe it might be worth paying him a flat fee per customer per visit, but if you get a return customer that's something that you earned and you don't owe him anything at that point.

Just goes to show that the variety of fraudulent advance-fee schemes,
is limited only by the imagination of the charlatans who offer them.

Way to stick to your guns, Cosmin!!

Cosmin thought I'd reply because you've shared information with me in the past.

I'm going to take a different path than these replies. In the financial planning and investment products industry it is not uncommon for some type of residual compensation for business you would not have originally had. That said this may not be your guy. Pickiing a partner is hard to do as there are so many variables. So that's an issue I will not address.

There's no question you have top talent, an existing customer base, have been looking to expand and I assume looking to get to the next level in the profession. If someone could bring you clients you otherwise would not ever have than yes it should be profitable to you and that someone who made it happen.

In the investment indusrty they call it a house account and the financial planner earns less on it than he would on a client he could get on his own. Same concept applies here. Even if the new client refers another it wouldn't have happened without the original person giving you the client so IMO a residual would be warranted.

From my perspective if a person can set you up with clients it reduces your marketing and increases your hands on detailing time which is where you want to be "working on cars", thats where the profit is. Keep the referral compensation simple and easy to track.

But most of all only do business with people you like and trust.

Best of luck to you and continued success.

Sounds like a great deal. for him

Should have offered to take your business, cut it in half, and then DOUBLE IT

I do the 5% thing here as well, great way to get people to promote you. I also offer a refer 10 details get yours done free incentive, because some people would rather have a free detail than make money. Works great.
