Hello all,

First off this is my first post here on the autogeek forums, been a long time reader though. So much helpful information from you guys, so right up front I say thanks.

I've been unsuccessful at identifying this particular defect (see photo). It's worst on the horizontal surfaces (roof/hood/trunk) leading me to think its some sort of etching but I've never seen anything like it. Its got some serious depth to it. Its almost looks like tiny little pits in the paint.

Car: 04 Acura TSX Midnight Hawk Pearl - Not meticulously maintained but far from neglected. Semi regular waxing (once every 6 weeks or so with 845). Polishings are few and far between being once per year if not longer.

Any thoughts?

I'd say water etchings or an etching of some kind. The photo isn't that great.

I was thinking it was some sort of etching too, I'll try and get a better picture in the morning.

Welcome to autogeek, it's more than likely water spots since that area is direct sunlight, see if it has a texture of some sort

I know what OP's talking about.

I have the same pitting on my dark Lexus on the horizontal surfaces only.

My theory is that the paint gets hot and soft and breaks down.

My light colored car is older and does not have this problem.
