So I read through all of the thread by rubbishboy on DW and It got me thinking about making my own wax. I have begun making some waxes and it is really interesting.
I have tried several combinations so far and I have finally created a workable wax. It has been really fun to try and it is rewarding to create something that can be put on a vehicle. I have one that is workable enough to apply and remove and it looks good but it isn’t up to the AG product standards quite yet.
Anyone out there with more knowledge than me please chime in because right now this blind squirrel is just hoping to find a nut :xyxthumbs:
It is interesting to see the creative math going on with wax companies. Saying 100% on the tub is very misleading… Carnauba is super hard and the only way to make it workable is to add solvents so already the 100% is blown. What they mean when they say that is “Out of the wax content carnauba is 100%”
I haven’t taken many pictures yet but I will begin to and post them here.
My Supplies:
  • Carnauba wax
  • Bees Wax
  • Candilla Wax
  • Turpentine
  • Linseed Oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Orange Oil (coming soon)
Here are some pics and I will post more as I go along

Very interesting. Hope it works out for ya! I wonder though, is making your own wax cost efficient?

Right now I could have bought supernatural and still had money left over to buy more products. I am doing this for the experience and fun rather than cost efficiency

Haha that's crazy. I'm assuming it would make much more then 8oz though. So you possibly could come out on top, granted it works. Yeah, the experience is definitely a cool thing.

This is something I have always wanted to do so my hat is off to you! Are you planning on commercially producing this or is it more of a hobby type experiment? Either way, I am definately subscribing. :)

It really is fun to play around with. If I create something that is worthy of being sold then I would love to sell it. If I create a wax that is nice with AG's permission I'd love to send it out to a few ppl free of charge and have them review it for me and let me know what they think of it. Corey I'd love a review of it and Christian900 I'll make sure you get one too

If its ok with AG I would be honored.

Wow I have to admit that is rather interesting. I always wondered just how much effort it takes to make a good car wax. I would be interested if you posted up your quick notes on how you chose the mixtures and what not. Unless like you said its all just a shot in the dark. Cant wait to read the reviews when you finish with it.

As am I...how cool would it be to make your own wax?

...Ok AutoGeek, now you need to sell kits and/or ingredients/tools for us to make our own wax

That's actually not a bad idea. It's kind of like the niche market for home brewery kits. I think if you come up with a wax that works and relatively easy to follow steps, you could actually sell it. I would possibly buy a kit just to see what's involved in getting started with making your own wax instead of simply reading about it.

i wouldnt have time to brew my own wax. much easyer buying it. 1 tube last me like 2 years. its well worth it ....plus im not very handy it would probably come out like lumpy oatmeal..Im the MAN

I would advise you not to do that. Keep the formula to yourself. You never know, you might come up with the next greatest car wax.

Good luck on the endeavour. Looking forward seeing the final product and read some reviews!

I would agree to if I was asking for the formula. I am asking how you chose to use what ingrediant, since I have no idea what does into making a wax.

I agree, trying new things, inventing new contraptions is all part of the fun of this "hobby" (I say hobby as at even one point in time in everyone's detail career we did it for fun). I'm feverishly still working on the Dry Box and have a few more months of data collecting then I'll hopefully have things zeroed in for a few beta tests to be done! Good job on the wax!

I dont mind sharing a few of my notes. I learned quickly that you need to make sure you have enough solvent in the mix. The first couple I made were solid as a rock and felt like a candle more than anything. They were totally unworkable. I played around with it some more andeventually created a wax that was workable and atleast able to put on a vehicle. I have also created waxes that wouldnt solidify because of too much solvent. It really is trial and error (atleast when you are doing it at home) and you dont have a degree in chem.

Basically I started out randomly mixing ingredients together but I then eventually started to hone in on what ingredients do certain things. The orange oil will now create a new challenge when that comes in in a day or two.

From here on out Ill take pictures of the waxes and post them here so youall can see what I mean and what they look like.

Thanks for the encouragement fellas

Jon
