Anyone else familiar with the Mayan Calendar and an interpretation that 12/21/2012 will be the Apocalypse ?

Seriously. I remember when everyone was giving money to that guy who predicted the world was going to end this year. What a scam. But its America and people can get away with that nonsense here.
 
If you live life every day to the fullest; why care when the world will end?

Other theories suppose that date is merely as far as they got when compiling their calendar. Bill Gates must know more, the calendar in Windows 7 goes to 12/31/2099. Somebody will probably be wringing their hands over that 87 years from now. I don't expect to see it.

Mayan calendars and various scriptures notwithstanding, I expect the end will come soon after some misanthropic nut lobs the 1st nuke.

The Mayan calendar is chiseled onto a big round stone. It didn't end, I think they just ran out of rock. Maybe the rest of it's on the other side??? Happy New Year Everyone!

My guess is the guy who was writing the calendar either got tired, ran out of rock, or died so it ended on December 21, 2012.. :dunno:
 
Corey and I was discussing this the other night and we found out that the Mayan calendar ended on that day because it resets every 5000 years. That is the last day in another set of 5000 years for them. It is suppose to reset at 5000 the following day. It's kind of like new years for them.
 
i agree with most here, world will not end when i first heard of it i would have agreed but after some research such as iomcamaro has done has proven otherwise, my guess is the myan's ran out of all possible combination's. so the calender came to an end and had to make another one, i bet there is another one that has not been found yet, there's still alot out there on this planet we know nothing about or has not been found yet...dont get worried if anything happens people will just go nuts building underground bunkers for nothing.me i want a old missile silo or underground communications bunker converted into a subterranean home....
 
The Mayas, like many Mesoamerican, thought of time as being cyclical and also linear. They had several calendars, but the longest one went for a little over 5100 years (Long Count). Something cataclysmic would occur at the end of each Long Count calendar (the previous world had been destroyed by a flood). However, we do know that the Mayas calculated dates beyond 2012 to help predict lunar eclipses, the rising of the Morning Star, and other planetary marvels. Obviously, there would be no need to do so if the world was to end. A lot of anthropologists don't buy the theory that the world will end by said date.

I do not know but we are celebrating Christmas on the 20th. That way everyone knows what they received and can go out happy or sad. I might suggest just to cover the bases that Autogeek have early sales this year.

Complete stupidity...

How could a civilization predict the end of the world when it could not predict the end of itself?

That being said...if anyone no longer has a need for their earthly posessions (detailing products for example) I will gladly take said possessions and treat them with the utmost care.
 
Hopefully it won't end before 5:00 PM on 12/21/12.....that's BOGO Day. :cry:
 
First and foremost, the Mayans did not predict 12/21/2012 as the end of the world; its the interpretation of some of todays scholars that made that assertion.

Secondly the Mayans were among the most brilliant and skilled astronomers & mathematicians who constantly followed the movements of the sun and the moon. They predicted eclipses, explained the movements of planets, and devised a sophisticated calendar of the solar year. They predicted the movement of Venus crossing the sun in June of 2012. AND they did all this by looking at the sky; there are few today that can look in the sky and identify even a planet!

Whatever your beliefs, what they were able to accomplish is amazing even in todays standards. Todays most brilliant minds would be hard pressed to duplicate their finding without the use of computer models and telescopes.
