I am clueless at this point. It is black paint with clearcoat on a 4runner. You decide and let me know what this newbie is looking at. If it is cloudy how do I fix it. If it isn't I am going to have my cataracts taken out real soon.

Is this the original paint? I see a ton of orange peel.

To my knowledge it is. I bought it used from a toyota dealer last October. They claimed that the vehicle had never been damaged or repainted.

Well then, I would say its not really "chalky" but could definately use a good buffering... do you have a polisher?

I have a pc plus manzerna ip, 85r. You said it has a lot of orange peel. The entire truck has the same appearance. Isn't orange peel a paint failure that cannot be fixed? I am going to call the dealership b/c if it has been repainted and they failed to disclose it, then they are liable. I also did a carfax report before I bought it and it was clean.

I do not know that it has, paint just looks like it could use some TLC. Was just a question to see what we are dealing with.

I treated the panel with the following, however, other than taking out the swirls that paint is still cloudy.

pc w/ ccs orange pad ip, manz 85, white pad 85, then coat of aio and klasse sealant.

From what i can tell by the picture, it looks pretty good. I do notice the orange peel that Meghan was referring to. I do notice this more these days on many factory paints. I think the best way to deal with this is wet sand and a rotary/compound. You seem to have some quality products to deal with spiderwebbing and small scratches.

It doesnt look chalky, sometimes at the right angle black does have like a haze look to it in the right sun light. Also in the 3rd and 4th picture that quarter looks like a re-paint.

Is orange peel effect fixable? Interesting that it looks repainted, b/c the dealer assured me it wasn't. I bet you are right though. I am going to work on the other side and compare the two sets of pictures.

Most definately, to be honest most people do not even touch it. If I had orange peel on my new car I would just leave it alone, your average non-OCD, non-detailing minded person would never notice orange peel.

Open the door on that side, hatch and window if you can. Run your finger on the inside of each of those and feel for a paint line or it being slighly rough inside all the jambs or window. Also look down the sides of each vehicle and look for different textures per panel.

I too see a light haze more than a chalky look, additional polishing and jeweling of the paint should help.

Orangepeel is not failure of paint in any way, has more to do with over application if anything. Manufacturers dont commonly spend time buffing paint between levels and clearcoat to provide the best finish. Wetsanding will help but costly and timely ... most the time you just leave it alone.

It's good to know that some of you are saying orange peel is "normal"...my 2006 A6 has it too and I thought there was something wrong. It's pretty consistent across my entire car so I convinced myself that it was normal.

It is normal to a point, then you have some bodyshops that really induce orange peel.

I haven't had a chance to check for the repaint lines, but I will check it. The entire vehicle has the same look. However, when direct sunlight is not on it, it looks a lot better. Will the pc with a yellow pad, and ip improve it? Wet sanding sounds time consuming and expensive.

Yes look for line on the inside of body lines. The pc and the yellow pad are not going to do anything worth while with the orange peel and roatry wouldn't either. The only way is to wet sand the paint, compound and then polish.

I know that I do not even want to try to wet sand it. I just read a instructional on how to wet sand paint by hand. Will the dulling get worse? Are there any products that will make it look better?

I came to find out via a friend at Toyota that it is having a lot of problems with their paint quality, especially on the '07-'08 tundras and 4th gen. 4runners. The main complaint is orange peel, flaking and peeling of paint, complete paint failure. In fact, a petition has been started and legal action threatened via a class action suit. I do not think a class action suit will materialize for a non-material defect/breach. However, it may explain my situation.

Once again, thank you to everyone who has helped out with my latest dilemna. At least the swirl removal is going well, so far... If anyone has anymore relevant information for me let me know.

I checked to see if it has been repainted. I opened the tailgate and the passenger door and there are no signs of a line or rough paint. Considering what I have been told it appears that the truck has not been repainted.
