I love my new Flex 3401, but am wondering if mine is abnormally loud. It's so loud that I determined that I need to wear ear protection when using the Flex from now on. To give you an idea of how loud mine is, I notice a temporary reduction in hearing ability after I have been using it for a while. I would say it's one-and-a-half to two-times as loud as my PC.
Anyone have any thoughts or feedback?

Hmm...haven't had that experience at all with mine. I'll try to post a video with mine in action for comparative purposes. Sounds (no pun intended) like yours may be extra loud.

Is it loud at all speeds? I have an old PC and a PCXP and they're a lot louder than my Flex.

Well, I don't operate under speed 4. I used it once to correct a truck at speeds 4 through 6. When the sound is directed towards my ear, it almost tickles my eardrum.

My wife just bought a fancy new phone. I'm going to see if she can download a decibel meter app. If she can, I'll measure my flex and rupes 21, and report the results.

Okay, after installing the app and conducting the test (I downloaded two apps to compare results), the Flex operates at 88 decibels, and the Rupes 21 at 87 decibels. To me, the Flex has a much higher pitch than the Rupes. I can tolerate the Rupes, but the Flex after awhile is certainly uncomfortable to my ears.

Thanks for the link. I didn't know AG carries these. Just from that short test I did a few minutes ago, my ears are ringing moderately.
I'm starting to wonder if being a cannon crew member in an artillery battalion took its toll and is now just showing up.
I used to think ear protection was for people who over-worry. I would recommend ear-pro to anyone operating a da or a rotary.

I wear ear plugs, once the ringing/hissing starts its to late, I know.:buffing:

I wouldn't say the Flex 3401 is loud. And certainly no louder than any other tool used in this industry.

Make sure the backing plate is seated correctly and the appropriate washer and bolt are being used and they are tightened down firmly.

If you have not lubricated the felt ring behind the backing plate, perhaps consider this....
