The clear is gone in most places but some is still in tact

Couldn't you just completely remove the clear. Of course the car will then not have it. But the paint would look better when buffed

That's a nice idea, but basecoat isn't like single stage paint, you can't buff it up.

You don't buff the base (color) coat. You buff the clear coat which in this case is gone.

Why not. Old cars didn't h e clear coat and detailers use to wetland and buff them all the time?

Yes. That was single-stage paint. The basecoat that is under clearcoat is not single stage paint, it's basecoat, it is different than single-stage, you can't buff it, it won't shine up, if you make any improvement to it with oily glazes or heavy waxes it will last for only a short time before it returns to that oxidized appearance.

Read post #6...you can cut and buff single stage (older cars), but you cannot buff base coats. You can buff clear coats, but in this case it's gone.

wet sand it and send it to the shop to get it re-clear and ask for a discount. tell them you want half off cause half of the labor is done.

lots of glaze and wax every two wks will be the best you can do.

dont wet sand it. you ll really be pissed then as it will be totally done for and look like crap

i recently had the experience of clear coat failure, in my case the paint was originally single stage, some clear had been sprayed over it, and i had no success in trying to polish it

Meguiar's no. 7(glaze)
Then wax it, the Collinite's are good I
I have 476s

There was a video on youtube. Where the guy had a carbon fiber hood that had CC failure. He wet sanded it down and shot CC himself.
