When someone is labeled as an expert, they’ll typically have a degree, many years of experience and are an authoritative voice in their industry.

I see that happen a lot when people want to start their own auto detailing business. They want something or someone to “validate” or “credit” them as an expert.

Well when you decide to become a business owner, you immediately become the expert. You can’t wait for someone to tell you, “Hey, this guy is an expert in what he does and should be trusted.”

You have to truly believe in your skills and confidence that you can solve any problem a customer may have. This type of mentality will NOT come from buying more products/tools or attending hands on training.

Change Your Mindset Not The Products

When I first stared my business, I thought I needed to buy every “professional” product out there to get “professional” results. And that anything less than the best would be labeled as a “hack”.

Now that I look back at it, it had nothing to do with what products I bought. It didn’t matter if I bought a $10 wax or a $100 wax. What mattered is that I can solve customers problems with the resources I had available to me- regardless if I actually had them or not.

Because as an expert, it’s not that I had all the solutions to any problems, but that I can find solutions to any problems.

Even if all you own is a bucket and wash mitt for your business, you’re an expert. You have to believe it and trust yourself. If not, you’re going to wait for someone else to say you’re good enough.

What If A Customer Asks Me Something…

A lot of times, regardless if it’s in business or life, you’ll assume and anticipate something bad happening before you even take the first step forward.

You may tell yourself, “I can’t offer paint correction services because I don’t have any photos or testimonials to show.” This all comes down to your mindset. You don’t HAVE to have 10,000 hours of practice to tell yourself you can do it.

Remember, the customer doesn’t know nearly as much as you do in the detailing industry. So even though you may not feel like a “qualified” expert, your customer will think you’re the expert that’s here to solve their problem.

Sales and Marketing

In my opinion, if you’re starting a business or have a business already, this is the order of importance in what you are:
  1. Marketer
  2. Salesman
  3. Expert
  4. Detailer
But unfortunately, most people have it in a different order:

  1. Detailer
  2. Expert
  3. Marketer
  4. Salesman
Let me give you a high overview:

Marketer: You need to learn how to bring in qualified leads and sales all year long. You’ll be able to make a lot more money, expand your business and always have food on the table. You should be well versed in copywriting, email marketing, search engine optimization, Facebook ads, Google AdWords, and many other forms of marketing.

Salesman: First off, no matter if you bake cookies, sell pens, or want to go to the movies- you are a salesman. Going back to being a marketer, what good is it if you have hundreds of leads coming in a month if you can’t close them?

Expert: Expert is 3rd because no one cares or knows that you’re an expert if you can’t get people to notice you, i.e. marketing/sales. Expert is knowing your skills and products like no other.

Detailer: Now that you’re landing sales and have trust with your customers, you can go on and do the easiest part and detail. This doesn’t mean the detailing part is not important just because it’s last on the list. But if you want to be more than a one man show (which I 100% highly recommend) and want to make some good money, you’ll focus on the top 3.

Conclusion

Although this is my honest opinion, I feel like if you structure your mindset and business like this, you’ll be able to truly expand and grow like you’ve never thought before.

Now it’s your turn: What are your opinions on this?

Interesting take. Any specific examples from your detailing business and experience that stand out to you?

I don't think there is any one area that is more important than the other, they all needs to be balanced to what you want out of your detailing business. Do you want a job or do you want a business with employees? Define what you want and focus your efforts towards that.

I think it's more simple...It's a balance of proficient business knowledge (detailing services/skills), customer service and branding.

There is really no such thing as an expert because everyone can always learn something new, but there is a thing such as mastery.

Mastery requires endurance. Mastery, a word we don’t use often, is not the equivalent of what we might consider its cognate — perfectionism — an inhuman aim motivated by a concern with how others view us. Mastery is also not the same as success — an event-based victory based on a peak point, a punctuated moment in time. Mastery is not merely a commitment to a goal, but to a curved-line, constant pursuit.
