Jay Leno Garage - All Purpose Cleaner and Interior Detailer Review by Mike Phillips
Tested out two more product in the new Jay Leno Garage Advanced Vehicle Care line. As the Jay Leno Garage line of products evolves it will include something for ever area of you car that needs to be cleaned and protected.
Jay Leno Garage All Purpose Cleaner and Interior Detailer
Every complete line of car care products includes a quality all-purpose-cleaner and an interior detailer. The APC is for doing grunt work like cleaning oily or grimy messes and the interior detailer is a spray detailer for the inside of your car like an exterior spray detailer is for the outside of your car. Both are like tools in a master mechanics tool chest for performing specific tasks.
Here's what Jay Leno's Garage has to say about the products...
Jay Leno Garage All Purpose Cleaner
JLG's All-Purpose Cleaner is a powerful cleaning solution that is formulated to break down oil, dirt and grime. Use to clean engine bays, wheel wells, plastic trim and tough interior stains.
Jay Leno Garage Interior Detailer
Jay Leno's Garage Interior Detailer is a gentle cleaning formula designed to aid in the cleaning of sensitive interior surfaces. Safe for use on plastic, rubber, vinyl and leather surfaces.
So pretty straightforward product descriptions and pretty straightforward products. There shouldn't be any mystery surrounding what these products are and how to use them. If you're new to the car detailing world you might not be familiar with interior detailers. This is a category of product introduced about 10 years ago for quickly cleaning a modern car's interior while leaving a little protection and improving the appearance of the wide variety of surfaces found in new cars.
I know from experience that the materials and surface in new cars are a lot different and I would also say more sensitive to traditional dressings like Armor-All. Back in the 1960's and 1970's you could use an Armor-All type product on just about any car without any issues. No so anymore. Some surfaces in modern cars will react with some ingredients and make the surface sticky or look splotchy. And modern materials used in new cars last longer without the use of a dedicated dressing. It was common to see the vinyl dash in a car from the 1960s and 1970s crack over time. When is the last time you saw the dash on a new Toyota or Ford crack? Me? Like never. I never see dashes cracking any more and that's because just like the phone in your pocket is out dated if you bought it yesterday, the chemistry used to manufacture modern car interiors also advances about as fast as technology in other sectors of our manufacturing world.
So instead of a dedicated dressing that may or may not work, or may or may not screw things up... now days you're just as well off using a product that lightly cleans and is completely safe on all surfaces and that's what the Jay Leno Interior Detailer is all about.
Test Vehicle - All original 1957 Oldsmobile Fiesta Stationwagon
I borrowed this car from Mike Stowe's car collection to test out some new Jay Leno products besides the all-purpose-cleaner and the interior detailer as well as to test out a new compound and polish. Mike bought this out of a museum a few years ago and outside of hotroding it with an updated 455 Big Block Olds engine, tricked out transmission and some one-off custom wheels, the rest of the car is all original including original lacquer paint and the original vinyl interior.
But... while the interior may be original and while this car may have spent most of it's life in a museum, it's far from clean inside. So after doing an extreme show car makeover to the outside of the car I tested out the APC and the interior Detailer.
Perfect companion product
While the Interior Detailer is NOT a dedicated vinyl protectant it's actually the perfect companion product for the all-purpose-cleaner BECAUSE even though wiping off the all-purpose-cleaner will remove most of the cleaner and the grimy dirt it loosens, following the all-purpose-cleaner with a very liquid interior detailer acts like RINSING to re-liquefy any cleaner and grime still on the surface and then fully remove this mess and at the same time leaving the vinyl surfaces looking better and feeling better to the touch.
