Just another new guy with OCD

I am just an amateur detailer, I mainly maintain my vehicles and help my friends out in exchange for beer/food

I use a PC, and a rotary.

My Daily is a 01 Jet Black 325ci, and my fiance has a Black 07 Camry and I have a german look Black 1974 VW Super Beetle.

My beetle is single stage and needs some work, it was resprayed about 6 years ago, sat outside till last year when I decided to finish it. I wet sanded and buffed the front half last year but am not totally pleased with the results. So I am going to do the rest of the car this year, there is still some peal on it since I was a wuss with the wetsanding. Don't worry there are 4-5 coats of paint on it so I know I have paint to work with.

I plan on sanding it with 1000, 2500, and 3000 then
105 with a w5000 wool pad via rotary
205 with a w8207 pad via rotary
205 with a w9207 pad via PC
3m UF on a blue 3m pad via PC
and top it with Auto Glym HD wax

What do you guys think? I know its simular to the el camino that Mike did so I hope it works well, I am just trying to get my process in order so I can buy some new stuff.

Looks good, by the time you finish out with the 2nd PC step it should be flawless.

This is a very curved body style so you'll have to hand sand most of it, for the flat panels you could Damp-Sand by machine using your PC, one thing for sure the sanding marks will buff out faster....

The section below was sanded using the #3000 Unigrit Foam Finishing Disc on the Meguiar's G110v2 on the 5.0 Speed Setting for about 5-6 Section Passes.

Here are the results after Machine Compounding using the Surbuf MicroFinger Buffing Pads on the Meguiar's G110v2 on the 6.0 Speed Setting with M105 Ultra Compound for about 5-6 Section passes.

We followed this with M205 Ultra Finishing Polish on a W9207 Foam Finishing pad on the 5.0 Speed Setting using the G110v2 for about 4 passes with medium pressure and then two more section passes with just a little more than the weight of the machine to keep the pad flat to the surface. The results you see here are only after polishing with M205, there is no wax or paint sealant applied at this point.

The test section was also wiped clean using straight Mineral Spirits to remove any residual polishing oils.

Note the Dime in this picture carefully placed onto the paint

Close-up to show there are no sanding marks left on the surface, no tick marks or haze. There is a spec of dust just to the lower left hand corner off to the side of the dime that we left there to show just how close we are to the paint when taking this picture. This paint is LSP ready.

IF you sand by hand, instead of starting at #1000 consider starting out at #1200 or even #1500 using Meguiar's Nikken Unigrit Finishing papers. Their papers will tend to cut as fast as one grade below the grade they are rated out while leaving a flatter sanding mark pattern and more paint on the car plus and easier buff-out...

Also, since you have a PC you might be interested in trying out Surbuf MicroFinger Buffing Pads and M105 for the cutting portion instead of the rotary. It's incredibly effective plus you get away from the traditional swirls instilled by a rotary buffer and pretty much remove the risk of burning through the paint.

2.5 from a newer wrx, I would love to do an STI swap but its just too much considering the amount of money I have to spend on a porsche g50 trans

a 2.5 with an fp green should be more than enough to make me happy in a car that weighs 1800lbs

cool ! i just did a swap to brand new sti, but its rebuilt stage 1 with cp pistons, stock turbo, id like to go with the gt30 turbo.
