These days about the only thing I use my old PC for in to get into some tight areas with a 4" pad and to apply a wax or sealant to something large like my enclosed car trailer. After going thru two Lake County 3 1/2" DA backing plates I thought I would try rotary back plate with a PC to Rotary adapter. Well the LC rotary backing has the same problem as their DA packing plate. The foam just rips aparts. So far I have been lucky not to scratch my paint. I even had the LC DA backing plate rip apart applying Collinite 845 to my trailer on speed 2. One thing is for sure I'll never buy another LC Backing Plate. I wish 3M made a 3 1/2" backing plate.

Gary, same here... try the Meg's 3.5" rotary bp. So far so good. I've searched for a 3M 3.5" bp, but no go. I have the 43/4" and love it.

Perhaps try the gloss-it backing plate? I've not tried one personally, but they get great reviews on other forums...

Thanks for the suggestions RSurfer and mbaledge. The Gloss-it backing plate looks like it's made similar to the European 3M Perfect-it Rotary Backing Plate that I use on my rotary and really like. They even make a DA version so you wouldn't have to use a Rotary to DA Adapter. I may have to try it. They make it in 3".

The similarities between the gloss-it and 3m bp are what drew my attention to them. I know that the DA models are on my shopping list :xyxthumbs:

It sure does bite .Lucky for the fact no damage.More important is why this is happening more and more.Looks someone needs to look into the age of the foam used or the process they use to attach the foam to the BP.Guess all of us really have to be carefull from this point on and keep a close eye on ours or just shelf them. Not like Gary or Ron don"t know how to use a product.

Gary,
Send me an email and I will send you a warranty replacement. From the picture it looks like that is a rotary backing, the DA plate has rivets and its more reinforce to withstand the friction from a DA

He said he went through two 3.5" LC DA BP's, so he gave the rotary one a try with the same result.

Jason,

I appreciate the offer and love AG's customer service but after having the same thing happen to 3 different LC backing plates (2 DA backing plates and 1 rotary backing plate) I don't really want to put one on any of my polishers again. It's not worth the chance of messing up the paint on any of my cars.

All 3 times it happen it seems like the foam itself rips apart. I think the problem is with the urethane foam that they use.

That is scary. When did you buy these plates? I just got a PC last month and had no problems with black plates...so far.

The last 3 1/2" DA backing plate was purchased this last summer. The previous 3 1/2" DA backing plate and 3 3/4" rotary backing plate were purchased before that. The first time I actually used the rotary backing plate was last week even though I have had it for a while. Years ago when I used my PC for more then just tight spots with 4" pads I think I had a 5" LC backing plate on it and never had a problem with it.

The problem must be with the newer LC bp. I had 2 -3.5" and 1 -5" do the same thing. I have an old 5" DA bp with no problems. The newer urethane just crumbles. The mix must have been bad.

Ron, didn't you say before that you messed up your paint when the backing plate ripped apart?

The rubber Meguiar's backing plates for both DA use and rotary buffer use are very nice, also the Edge DA backing plate is a nice unit.

The 3M backing plates are very well built but the Velcro the use is almost overkill as it's so hard to remove a pad that you want to be careful so you don't loosen the Velcro interface on the pad itself.

:)

Fortunately I was buffing out my headlight with a 4" pad and it did put a gouge in my light. The other times the pad and the bp went flying, but no damage.

If anyone ever has a problem/question regarding our products, I urge them to contact me here directly at the factory.

Thanks.

Eric
