I spent most of the day today going to businesses around town to talk to owners/workers as well as to leave a few business cards on their desk.

I'm also planning to go door to door in my neighborhood on Saturday.

How do you guys market your business?

A good salesman will tell you you need a 1 minute speech when doing personal marketing.

You have to get your point across on what you do and why they need you.

I agree. You need to have an elevator speech. You need to get someones attention quickly in a positive way.

I like your enthusiasm, but door to door might not be all that effective. You might want to give away a free detail online, or a coupon with some percentage off on a service package within a 30 days or so.

Yeah, I understand the elevator speech concept. I see no reason why door to door would be ineffective though.

In my experience giving away free stuff online isn't very effective unless you get MASSIVE exposure. I don't have access to that level of exposure.

I think door to door in my [small] town may be the best bang for my buck.

But, the purpose for this thread wasn't really for my own information, I was just curious to see what has worked well for other people.

In the end, your business will probably be determined mostly by referrals if you work is good and you have satisfied customers.

For those potential customers you approach and they ask you want me to pay $x for that you need to be able sell why they need you.

I hate it when someone starts a sales pitch whilst I'm trapped on an elevator with them. I'm steadily looking at the dial hoping my floor comes up/down soon. The only thing thats worse is when you're trying to take a whizz in a public restroom and someone approaches the urinal right next to you, then wants to strike up a conversation

Keep beatin the streets young fella, and good luck
