I live by Muscle Car City. The other day, my twin teenagers and I just left Walgreens which is next door. We drive through Muscle Car City parking lot and I look over and lo and behold there is a new winged Daytona. The car is made off of a Challenger. I am a big winged fan and my son was like, "Dad, you need one." I told him, "I don't have that kind of scratch." I didn't wait around to see if the owner would come out. I did not want to be a stalker. Sorry for the bad pics, daughter took them as I didn't have anything with me take some.

I love the nose and wing for sure but the modern, custom wheels let it down! Also, why not a custom tail section, something needs to be done there as well. I have to say the nose is awesome!!

Definitely. A set of Barts or Bassets would fit the look just right.

Could you post a pic of these wheels, curious! I was thinking some 20" Hurst or whomever makes the Magnum 500 copies I've seen on Stangs. Also, the Halibrand mags would look good too but all the wheels need to be 20" as the Challenger is sooooo huge!

I always thought the original winged Daytonas were
made off of the Dodge Chargers of that era.

Kinda like the C6 Corvette "Grand Sports" being
made available in any of the "regular"
C6 colors, and other "regular" options...

Close...but: ______________ (fill in the blank).

Your right Bob, Chargers only but its just a tribute car I guess. Kinda like when people put the 01 on orange Challengers, that's also kinda weird.

I did not speak to the owner but I do know that Richard Petty has the boys at Petty Enterprises doing this kind of thing. But this car did not have any of the Petty badges or Arrington Performance badges which Petty uses some times. I do agree the wheels are ugly.

I'm not sure how I feel about it

Awesome. I would rather have a real Superbird, but this more affordable with better gas mileage I'm sure.
The Plymouth Superbird did over 200 mph in NASCAR in 1970. For that reason they outlawed wings and other aerodynamics like on that car. The rear wing had to be that high to allow the trunk to open, because back then, Nascar cars actually were stock cars. The rear wing produced 500 pounds of downforce and is bolted to the frame, via 2 tubes on each side, visible in the trunk.
They had to make a certain number of cars to sell to the public to make them legal for racing. The Superbirds won a lot of races and pushed NASCAR racing to speeds that will never be seen again, due to safety. It was the zenith of NASCAR design.

Winged-Plymouth SuperBirds/Road Runners were the
Winged-Dodge Daytonas/Chargers' beloved double-first Cousins.

I still think my 1970 Plymouth GTX w/440 Magnum
was purtier than those inbred ones. :D

Except that the new Chargers look nothing like the old ones. The new ones are super ugly buck tooth looking boxes. ugh. The new Challengers look much more like the old Chargers.

I'll hold off commenting on this observation of yours,
until after my eye exam this June 23rd.

Bob
I think the new Challengers look more like the old Chargers than the new Chargers do. The New Chargers look nothing like the old ones.

Of course, the new Challengers look mostly like the old Challengers. Obviously, the new Challengers don't look like a reinvention of the old Chargers, but I think they are the closest car to them made right now...
I'm not sure what the new Chargers look like, other than themselves.

Dad had a real one. He sold it with some difficulty for maybe $24K about 2003. It was in good unrestored condition. I drove it a few times. You know what it felt like? A late sixties Dodge with a good exhaust note. It had that kind of power steering Chrysler had back then where the wheel doesn't feel like its connected to anything. Except for the nose cone and the bright orange paint, it feels like a regular car. It wasn't particularly fast off the line.

the original model held the lap record at Talladegah for many years. Its adherents like to call it a "winged warrior" To me, its the ultimate in understated American elegance. (just kidding).
