Hi my name is Ryan. I have been lurking in the forum for a while now and learned alot from all the great posts and members from AG.:dblthumb2: I have made my 1st purchase from AG. I picked up my Griots polisher on speed 5 with the Cyan pad and M105 off the paint for about 2 seconds to avoid a sharp edge GM logo and within the 2 seconds the pad blown up into pieces why did that happen? Then I was using the tangerine pad with M205 and the pad collapsed I did what Mike said about priming and using less product when adding I cleaned the pad on the fly several times and washed with Megs foam pad cleaner and it wont come un-collapsed

Sorry have some good pics but it won't let me upload the pics I have for some reason.

Don't mean to be rude but like I said in my post

"Sorry have some good pics but it won't let me upload the pics I have for some reason."

Sorry I kept trying to upload the pics but said (file upload failed) and they are .JPG

The collapsed pad is likely due to too much pressure. Was the center of it hot when this happened? The Griots polisher is very powerful and will actually make pads smoke and melt them if too much pressure is used with too fast speed.

As far as the disintegrated pad, you should never lift it off the paint while running. It may have already been damaged prior to doing so.

Kevin, what do you use on your Griots 6" ROP the 6.5" pads on the stock backplate or did you get a 5" backplate and 5.5" pads?
Feed back please

OK I figured out how to resize my pics via Mike's thread http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...age-your-photo-gallery-into-your-message.html

These are the pads I was referring to on my post the tangerine is the collapsed one.

This is my first AG purchase sorry not a real unpacking pic taken after i used products I just couldn't wait. Anybody ever try the Mothers Reflections Top Coat I didn't get a chance yet looks interesting.

These are a few other supplies I use from the local auto parts store. The Megs foam pad cleaner that came with the wheel polishing kit seemed to work well with my HT pads

Well, that happens that pads disintegrate when you spin them at high speed. As far as the "collapsed" one, it could be that it is still saturated in the middle, or you might have overheated it.

It must have gotten overheated because I cleaned and dried it and its still collapsed. I primed the pad and used lesser product (m205) with every refill on the pad. I even sprayed a few squirts of QD on the pad before applying on next section of paint so there wouldn't be a dry start. I did the same stuff with the crimson pad using the megs #7 cleaned and dried then the megs U-wax and pad still looks new. I think its this Louisiana Hot and Humid weather no matter if its under the car port all day and rinsed till cooled 5 minutes later the cars hot again.

I'd still say that tangerine pad looks saturated in the middle. How's the velcro on the back.

Its completely dry I may be a noob still but I did a good job of cleaning out and drying the pad and its still collapsed I think the overheated suggestion is prolly what happened to it. The S.E. Louisiana humid moisture in the air is like hot steam touching everything outside even in the afternoon in the shade its still hot enough to cook an egg on my cars hood.

You overheat the pad by working it hard with the polisher, and heating up the velcro interface. This will usually cause the velcro to separate from the pad to some degree, and usually causes some damage to the backing plate, too.

WOW, thanks I just looked at the pad and there is a small bubble inbetween the velcro and pad in the middle where it was overheated. Even with it collapsed can I still use this pad or should I throw it away? I am going to order some more pads tomorrow morning want to see what the BOGO is. Any suggestions on pads or if you or anybody else use the Griots 6" ROP should I get the 5" BP with 5.5" pads? I find that no matter how much pressure I apply on speed 5, 5.5 , and 6 it don't bogg down with the stock BP and 6.5" pads.

I still have alot to learn from machine polishing. Thanks for any help and suggestions.
Great forums and members lots of helpfull info.:xyxthumbs:

I replied to your PM. What kind of car are you working on? Factory or repaint? Clear Coat or Single Stage?

For factory clear, the Megs DA MF system is hard to beat.

For foam or MF pads, i prefer 5.5 inch.

Use less pressure and less product. Even if you clean the pad, over using the products will build up and saturate.

The Tangerine pad does look like it collapsed do to overheating from too much pressure being applied. The Cyan pad might of had a little tear in the surface of the pad and once you lifted the machine off of the paint surface it caused the pad to tear apart. Like Kevin said you never want to lift the machine off of the paint surface when the machine is running. The more practice you have with the polisher and pads the better your technique will be.

Thanks for the help and info soo far. Any more help and suggestions are welcome and really appreciated. Here is a few pics of my car and a pic of me.

Before the damage happened to my pads I was starting to use M105/cyan pad, M205/tangerine pad, Megs #7/crimson pad, and Megs ULW/crimson pad. I only got the hood done before the pads messed up on me.

Wow, very nice! And the car's not bad, either.
That's funny. I was thinking the same thing. She is cute. Nice car too.

keep practicing. You will get the hang of it and that Buick will look beatiful. I have people approach me all the time asking to buy my old 98 Chevy pickup with 126,000 miles. IT looks great because I used it as a learning vehicle to get the techniques down. Honestly, I went through a few pads in the process myself.
