This is my first post although I have been lurking here for some time. I have a piece of trim on my 2008 Solara Convertible (it is new to me) that I don't know what to do with. It is matte black and I believe it could be aluminium as a magnet will not adhere to it - it is not plastic. It is the moulding that goes from one door jamb around the back of the top and houses the rear high mounted stop lamp and then continues to the other door jamb. It is basically an upside down U in shape with the widest part being about 3 inches. I am sure my Griot's 6" won't work well on it. The rest of the car looks quite good. Any suggestions as to what to use: machine vs hand, pads and what products would work best? Since I am relatively new to this, please do not use acronyms. I appreciate your help.

If it's matte black and metal it's likely powdercoated. Any sort of polishing with your Griot's machine will either make it shiny or remove the coating, neither of which are desired, I'm guessing.

I'd suggest a silicone-free instant detailer. Check out body-shop safe ones from Meguiar's (Final Inspection M3416), or us (Mothers, Professional Silicone Free Instant Detailer part # 85624). I believe the M34 is silicone free. I'm sure someone will chime in. There are also other brands offering this type of product that I can't recall at the moment.

Using a silicone based detailer will result in shine.

Good luck and welcome to AutoGeek.
