It's been a while since I've contributed anything to the community, so I decided to do a very quick comparison of the new Meguiar's Mirror Bright wheel cleaner against the outgoing DUB wheel cleaner. They're both color changing wheel cleaners. They're both developed by Meguiar's. It's easy to draw parallels, so let's jump right into it.
Both come in plastic bottles. Both have foaming spray heads. Both have the harsh chemical smell we've all grown to love(?) from these types of products. Both have generally the same direction for use. Shake bottle. Spray liberally on wheel. Allow cleaners to sit and work for a couple minutes without drying. Agitate to remove contaminants. Rinse thoroughly and dry. The only real difference is Mirror Bright (MB) recommends letting it sit for 1-2 minutes where as DUB recommends 3-5 minutes.
Alright, let's try it on our 2008 Acura MDX. I have purposefully not touched these wheels for the last four month, so they're fairly dirty. The left image is the front left wheel using MB and the right image is the front right wheel using DUB. Here's what they looked like before doing anything at all.
And here's what they looked like after spraying on a very liberal amount of product. The MB sprayer did not foam as much as DUB did. The foam that did apply from MB also seemed to break up quicker than DUB.
Both immediately started to change color as the cleaner reacted to the iron contaminants. Lots of purple bleed from all parts of the wheel, particularly the brake discs. MB did dry noticeably quicker than DUB. The image below show the MB product sitting for just two minutes and is almost completely dry already. The DUB product was sitting for 5 minutes, was still wet, and seemed to still be bleeding.
I used various wheel woolies sprayed down with additional product to agitate the wheels. The image below shows the wheel immediately after agitation.
This final image below shows the wheels after thorough hose rinse. I did not dry the wheels for this image.
Overall, I did like DUB more for a couple reason. The foam sprayer is nicer. The product stays wet and attached longer and, therefore, appears to stay active longer. Because it remains wetter, I used less product on my brushes for agitation. That being said, both seemed to delivery similar results when following the instructions. With fairly little work, both MB and DUB removed the large majority of brake dust and other contaminants that had built up on my wheels. If you are looking for a color changing wheel cleaner, I can easily recommend either Mirror Bright or DUB to tackle that job.
All questions, comments, and feedback is, as always, very much welcomed. Thanks!
