Meguiar's Professional Demo Kit - Mike Phillips Antique Car Wax Collection

When I first went to work for Meguiar's they had a demo kit for their Outside Sales Reps and Trainers, (that's what I was), that looked kind of like a briefcase.

Inside were small 2 ounce samples of the key products in the Professional line or Mirror Glaze line.

As a rep you could carry this with you and demo any of the products or leave the demo kit with a client to let them test out.

I saved two kits from the late 1980's and while Barry and Karen Meguiar were here for Detail Fest and checking out my antique wax collection I asked Barry if he would like to have one of the kits for his collection and of course when he said "yes" I gave it to him.

Here's a few pictures, resized from the original size to 800 pixels wide.

Comment....

If you look at the sample size bottle of the #7 it still has the original name.

The name was changed in the early 1990's to Show Car Glaze. I can share the story as to why when I have more time.

:)

Wow Mike, that's great! I bought my first Meguiar's Mirror Glaze products about that time, and I think those were all the products I had, except rather than the #1 I had #2 and #4. I'm not sure if I had the #3, although I remember being aware of it.

If I'm remembering, I sent in a literature request out of the back of Popular Mechanics or Popular Science, and I was sent a Mirror Glaze brochure from the regional Meguiar's office. Then I called them up with some questions, and they gave me the name of a body shop supply store that I could get them at, which was kind of a trek into the big city one Saturday morning.

Oh, I guess the other one I had was #39.

PS Oh, and very gracious of you to give one to Barry Meguiar! Who's got the bigger collection of vintage Meguiar's products in their office, you or him?

Nice collection Mike. You have an office that we all fantasize about. Wouldn't it be great to have a chemical formula sheet for all those waxes?

Wow, amazing some of those products are still being made! High tech yellow wax is in my collection.

Very cool antique collection Mike!!! And it's selfless of you to share one of your professional demo kit to Barry and Karen. Very nice gesture!

Awesome collection Mike, excellent display of Meguiar's NOS Professional Demo Kits, and products.:dblthumb2:

Mike, I've seen the shots of your vintage stuff over the years, but this is the first pic I've seen of the whole display. Thanks for sharing! Those sample cases are extremely cool!
I noticed a can that looks like Classic Quick Wax on the left side of the center shelf section, third shelf down. My meager collection has my two Classic favorites. Combined with Meguiar's #7, these two did about everything I needed to do, short of heavy correction.

#26 was my go to back then, I'm thinking about 1988 with my first new vehicle, 88 Nissan Hardbody pick up.

Sad to say... that's not the whole display. I have at least 3-4 more plastic totes filled with antique products. Need more shelf space. :D

I think these were the idea of Dick Koth - may rest in peace.

Correct. I have 3 cans of "Classic" wax. One still in the original box.

That's how it was back when all we had was single stage lacquers and enamels.

When modern clearcoat paints were introduced starting in the 1980's it was discovered that old abrasive technology didn't work AT ALL on clearcoat paints. I know I was there calling on body shops. That's where the #2 and #9 plus Meguiar's foam pads came into existence and became popular.

Most people on this forum don't understand back in the 1980's there was really only one company offering foam buffing pads and that was Meguiar's.

I know because I have ALL of the early foam pads in my collection.

As for the issue around compounds and polishes not working back then, I cover this in the first chapter in my how to book called Paint History Overview, pages 3-9.

The Complete Guide to a Show Car Shine

The first chapter in the above book is the foundational chapter upon which a person needs to know to fully understand the art of polishing paint.

Thanks for sharing your pictures Bill, they look like they are right out of the 1970's.

:)

Makes my day seeing posts like this, Mike. Many, many thanks!

I think Mr. Mckee can assist you with that. Perhaps dedicate a room at AG headquarters as a vintage car care products museum!

I bought a couple half-gallon jugs of #2 and #9 in the 80's and the vendor gave me a polishing pad and Meguiar's Tech bulletin #1 on the new "Finesse" system (which I sent to you a few years ago). The pad was a yellow one with an integral plastic 5/8 thread backing plate. Those things last forever! The OD has worn down an inch or so, but it's probably still useable. I don't know anything about foam pad chemistry, but from my meager experience, the expression "they don't make 'em like they used to" applies here.

I've got another strange item in the picture below, Armor All Ultra-Plate. It was advertised as a protectant for hard surfaces. In my experience, it was a miserable failure, leaving a slimy film behind that never dried.

Once again, thanks for sharing pics of your vintage stuff, Mike.
If you ever get to displaying more of it, please post pics for the enjoyment of us "vintage" detailers.

I have a tin of the Blue Coral Auto-Fom, as well as the bottle of liquid.

I'll take a proper pic of my meager collection of old products. Nothing special, just stuff I bought in the mid to late 90's.

He is preserving history....Hoarding is when you have multiplies of the same Antique Car Wax.
