Meguiar's Ultimate Black Tire Coating put to the test on a Lotus Esprit

Tires were machine scrubbed with Tuf Shine Tire Cleaner & Griot's Polisher with a Cyclo Brush.

After the car was washed and dried I sprayed two thin coats, back to back onto the tires using Meguiar's Ultimate Black Tire Coating.

My recommendations...

1. Spray-on in an area without wind to avoid overspray.

2. Apply BEFORE buffing out the car or polishing wheels so any overspray will be removed as a normal part of your detail process.

3. Your thumb is stronger than your index finger. If you're not an experienced Rattle Can Painter, practice using your thumb to depress the spray nozzle.

4. Use short bursts not long spray. Mist the product on using short bursts. If you try to spray on in a continuous spray you'll very likely spray on too much product and get runs and drips. Instead mist of fog the spray onto the tire using short bursts.

I like it. Especially for tires with an intricate design to the face of the tire. Being that it's an aerosol, the spray-on application gets into all the cracks and crevices of the tire design.

For the most part I only use TUF Shine now days because I like a finish that's dry and doesn't transfer any black oily residue to whatever touches the tire so if that's a feature you like then check these out.

I'll for sure be testing these out on my truck tires.

Looks good. Going to have to pick some up and give it a shot.

How would you compare it to the endurance gel?

I don't know if I'm a fan of the aerosol tire treatments due to the mess. I don't get much on the paint, but do on the wheels...that I just cleaned. I've got to the point where I'll spray the stuff on the sponge and then wipe it on the wheels.

Like to try it.
I've used Dupl-Color tire spray, worked fine and does hold up.
I'm thinking Meg's is better though.

I didn't have any problems spraying it, a little got on the wheels but I wiped it off right away.
The test was first done on my Sister's car, held up for about six weeks.
Not bad for $8.00.
I'll check on the price of the Meg's brand.

Looks pretty nice

I'm NOT a fan of shiny tires and I thought it looked damn nice.

The dark, shiny black tires provided super high contrast against both the wheels and the paint and made the entire car look phenominal.

How would you compare it to the endurance gel?

I wouldn't. The gel is a gooey dressing. Everyone is differenent but for me I don't like any dressing that after applying it, if I rub up against it, run a car wash mitt over it or touch it in any way it transfers black goo.

That's why I switched over to TUF Shine. It leaves behind a dry surface with zero black goo transfers. This new Meguiar's product looks like it will be similar.

The apray nozzle emits a small patter spray, if you hold the can about 5-6 inches away from the tire you have very good control over product placement.

I previoujsly posted before in this thread to apply in a place with no wind, then overspray is even less of a problem.

I am sold. Thanks Mike for the quick review.

No prolemo...

Can you spray on a applicator and apply?

Maybe? I'd say that would be doing things the hard way when the spray works so well. Especially if you have any kind of design on the sidewall of the tires.

Also, "wiping" on this dressing will likely reduce the shine. Just a guess but I'm pretty sure part of the "shine factor" comes from the dressing particles atomozing and joining together to create a uniform coating surface and this creates or magnifies the shine.

Just a guess...

Hmm i'd also be keen to try this method of application. Seems like a great product!

I'd recommedn trying it like I described.

Apply after washing and drying car, wheels and tires BUT BEFORE working on paint.

Simply have a wheel and tire microfiber towel on hand to wipe the wheesl after application and a paint microfiber towel to wipe the paint. As a back-up, when you do your paint polishing any overspray will be removed at that time.

The overspray is less of a problem than everyone thinks as long as you,

A: Apply out of the force of wind.
B: Spray on intelligently, that is SHORT BURSTS while holding the sprayer close to the tire.

I like the application. Judgement is still out on longevity for me though becuase if you treat TUF Shine Clearcoat right, that is don't use a wheel or tire cleaner on your tires after you dress them the stuff last a long time. I don't think it looks as good as this new Meguiar's product but for me nd my 40" tall tires, I'll take longevity plus good looks over really good looks but not as long of longevity.

When I get back from Mobile Tech Expo and the Stuart Boat Show, I'll try to dress my truck's tires, one with TUF Shine and one with Meguiar's Ultimate Black Tire Coating and then see how they look and hold up.

This will mean machine scrubbing my tires down to a fresh base again.

What is the risk of going 12 hours with mists of overspray on my paint? I applied at night and will wash when I get home 2mar.

Shouldn't be anything too serious to remove. If you have to apply a light polish or use a cleaner/wax over the affected area.

Could be washing or wiping with spray detailer will be enough to remove the Ultimate Black Tire Coating overspray.
