So I've been detailing as a hobby for a few years, only doing the simple stuff and no full corrections until later this year. I was wondering first if you had to recommend only one of the following books which would it be: Mike Phillips' The Art of Detailing or Mike Phillips' The Complete Guide to a Show car Shine. Also I don't want to bash Mike Phillips bc i know how much he knows, but being both a regular hobbyist and on this forum, do I really need either book. Like is it going to be worth the cost and time.

Unless you've been out in the field and really have enough experience to know it, I would say a desk reference is always good to have if you're not 100% sure. You can at the very least draw on a single source of information whose creator has a platinum clad history for decades in the car detailing world.
 
my wife purchased the set with DVD for xmas...Yes, you could hunt and peck between this site and youtube and get most of the info, but the books are nice to have.
 
I own both books and they are both equal in covering the basics. The Complete Guide to a Show Car Shine includes additional info on various buffers and options for clay replacements. You won't go wrong with either book.
 
I have the Show Car Shine book and it is always nice to glance at the book in case I get Alzheimer's Disease which has happened to me a couple of times.

Very informative and great to have as a reference.
 
I have been in bussiness for 16 years,I own both books and learn little tips every time I read them.
 
I have a few question. What is the difference between the two books? Do both of these have the same info but updated? If you have to choose one, which one?
 
I would get "The Complete Guide to a Show Car Shine". If I'm not mistaken, it is the updated version of "The Art of Detailing" and has more information.

That is correct.

The Complete Guide to a Show Car Shine is the second edition of "The Art of Detailing".

They're both jam packed with information but the second edition covers more tools, tips, techniques and products.


I think were just about out of the first edition and we probably won't re-order so if a person wanted a copy now is the time to get one.

In fact, if you look in my Signature Line I've removed the first edition. Also to get more information or to purchase a book just click on the picture of it in my Signature Line.


For what it's worth... when I grew up I bought and read all the books on car detailing and also car painting, (to read the parts about buffing paint after the paint job), for the most part all the information was out dated and I don't believe I ever learned anything in any of the books that actually helped me to detail a car.

So when I wrote these two books and actually any book I'm working on, I make sure that after reading it the person can go out into their garage and do the thing I write about in the book.

There are vocational colleges that use my how-to books as their course guide.

:iagree: Absolutely agree. It's great to have the book on my IPad. I can jump between the forum and Mike's book in an instant. I highly reccomended Mike's books and being actively involved in this forum. No better way to stay on top of things. Take care.
