Mike phillips.. Please help!!!!

I am in the process of detailing a 1962 Volvo P1800. The car has some DEEP scratches and I cant tell if they are from the body work(subsurface sanding marks) or from some wool pad abuse. The car was repainted 35 years ago so either is possible. The customer said he doesnt care..he just wants the oxidation gone...but I care and I will have countless sleepless nights if Im not able to give this beautiful classic a perfect finish. I dont have a thickness gauge...but I cant tell from one of the nicks in the paint that I have alot of material to work with. So WWMD(what would mike do)

The finish is cracked. Those cracks are as deep as the paint so no amount of sanding will remove them. As you have shown in the pics you can shine what is flat but you will not remove the cracks. You will end up filling the cracks with product which will highlight them. To achieve the perfect finish you want your are going to have to repaint the car.

I would do as the owner asked, and remove the oxidation while creating the best shine you can. If you let your ego take over, bad things are likely to happen.
