While detailing the car I got some water in my trunk carpet. I noticed it was wet so I left the trunk up so it could air dry. When I was done it felt dry so I closed the trunk. 5 days later I reopen the trunk to a strong mildew smell.

I have now removed the reversible trunk mat and cleaned it. The smell is not as strong but is still there. The entire trunk area is carpeted. What chemical or procedure would you recommend?

If it were me then I would go ahead and shampoo whatever carpet there may be within the trunk (including the mat?) with vacuuming both before & after. If the smell is still there then there would be a need for something like an odor eater.

More suggestions abound ........

Did a vactume and used Auto Glyms intr shampoo. Will check it out in the AM. Thanks for the input

white vinegar gets rid of and kills most molds .Spray with half vinegar and half water mix then towel up.

Its smells like vinegar for a day or so and then dissipates .Has worked very well for me .

Buddah -
I do like home remedies. Thanks

Tiger- never heard of it. Im at their site now. The write up is a bit confusing and there are no pics of the product. Is this a spay? I'll keep googling it. It may turn out to be a gem of a product.

I read that putting smelly shoes in the freezer will kill the offending bacteria/mold (not that I've tried it... there's food in there). Hmmm, How to get the inside of the trunk cold... leave the trunk open on a clear, below-freezing winter night? LOL, I don't know about that.

Also, UV light will kill mildew/mold/bacteria, you could put a uv light in there for a while... Just throwin' some out-of-the-norm ideas out there... :xyxthumbs:
