I need to be able to reach the roof of my Honda Element, so last month I bought a work platform online from Northern Tool. I chose the Ironton Extra Large Folding Work Platform because of the longer platform, higher 330 lb. capacity rating (many platforms are only rated for 225 lbs., and I weigh 230 lbs.), and user reviews. But when I received it, I was disappointed in its construction. While the size and height were good, the leg locks were pretty cheesy, the carrying handle a joke (you can only fit a few fingers through it), and it just didn't feel very substantial.
I happened to be walking through Costco and saw the Mastergrip work platform there. It appears to be a Costco store exclusive; I cannot find it sold or mentioned anywhere online. It's not even sold on Costco.com. The Mastergrip Work Platform is item number 823783; the cost is $59.99. It's a great tool. Here are some product shots:
The Mastergrip Platform deck is 38" x 12", and is 19.5" tall. It has a claimed 375 lbs. capacity. It does feel rock solid; the Ironton had some flex where this has none.
Unlike all the work platforms I have seen which have open U-channel legs and deck (like a typical aluminum ladder) the Mastergrip has tubular legs and deck. The carrying handle is a wide and comfortable canvas strap. The red lever on the leg is to secure the legs when the platform is folded.
The deck is grooved so water will be channeled away, and is also covered in grip tape. The single step on each end is topped with grip tape as well.
The leg locks use a strong spring loaded pin. There is no doubt when the legs are locked into position.
Pushing the red lever releases the pin lock.
The folded size is about 38" x 15" x 8". Due to its heavier construction, the Mastergrip Work Platform weighs 16 lbs. 10 oz. I did not weigh the Ironton before I returned it, but according to Northern Tool the shipped weight including the box is 13.1 lbs. So this platform weighs quite a bit more, but it's still light enough to not be a burden to carry.
