I threw a bottle of this in my last order because I was drawn to the fact that you can use it without running water. I recently bought a 2014 Dodge Durango and it is super "techs." All of the systems in the car are controlled by 3 main buses and I would imagine replacing one would require me to sell a kidney. I've never been shy about spraying water into an engine bay until I got this car. Onward...
The engine bay wasn't particularly dirty:
I sprayed the product onto a lukewarm engine and used a bristle brush to agitate. It made a nice foam which I liked and the cleaning ability was up to par for this job. I have no idea how it smells because I was totally stuffed up when I used it. I wiped the product up with demoted microfiber towels and was left with a nice "cosmetically clean" engine bay, cleaned perfectly safely and ready to be dressed/protected.
I sprayed the whole engine compartment down with Chemical Guys black on black and wiped up the excess.
The Total Engine Cleaner filled a void for me, an effective way to safely clean an engine bay with sensitive electronics. The cleaning power was adequate for this job. I'd like to give it another test on my beater pickup which is MUCH dirtier, and I would take a hose to, to test that aspect of its cleaning ability. All in all, a solid product.

I use low pressure water from the garden hose on mine. Cover what i need to. Never had issues. I would never use a high pressure water source to clean a modern engine.
