Mismatched paint

Over the weekend I saw a silver metallic car with mismatched paint and with a thread on another forum on the subject of matching paints in mind I did the best I could to snap a couple of photos using just my iphone,

Looks okay straight on...

From an angle it was easy to see the door and the rear fender didn't match, it could be the tint or the way the flake laid down when the paint was sprayed but it was easily noticeable.

A great painter can match metallic paint and you usually can't tell but not all painters can do this.

It truly is an art.
I have a friend that I would classify as a decent painter, but the metallics and the tinted clear coats could drive him crazy.
Silly as it sounds, getting the repaint to have just enough orange peel to match the factory orange peel is a challenge.

I once saw him walk a really fussy customer around his car and show him all the factory flaws. He then told the guy that what he did would be better than that, but don't expect him to correct the factory flaws.

A good painter will also blend the new paint into the old paint away from a door or fender gap. Your eyes are drawn to the seams and will spot the differences much quicker and easier than if the paint was blended in the the middle of a door or fender.

I think insurance companies will only pay for the damaged panel to be repaired, so that is all the painter gets paid to spray.

Not really too accurate. They owe to return the vehicle to "pre-loss" condition. If the paint matched prior, they owe to blend. This car obviously has some mismatched panels because of no blending. I can clearly see it in the 1st pic. Silver is one of the hardest colors to panel paint. Especially on high appearance panels like this. If I were replacing the door on this vehicle, I'd have to blend both adjacent panels for a proper match. If it were white or black, then it would be much more maintream to attempt to blend the color within the repaired panel.
