My website is basically complete and ready to 'launch' any day (telling everyone I know that it exists). Along with that I wanted to post my site on a variety of search engines, including google places (which is one of the more important places to be visible)

Before google will add you to their 'places' you need to be verified by them. This could be done either over the phone, or by postcard. They send you a PIN number to enter to finalize everything.

For some reason google will not allow me to be verified by phone. The option is just not there when I go to complete the listing (my cel number is entered correctly in the contact info). From some searching on the google discussion forum, it seems this is not so unheard of. In some instances they insist it be done via snail mail (postcard) which indicates 2-3 weeks

I do not own a shop, and strictly do mobile work. My home is the only mailing address that I use.

The big problem here is they want to send a postcard to a legit address where I can receive it and verify I exist. However, I really do not want to list my home address on google places for a variety of reasons. My intention was to listen the town I live in as a central location and just pin myself at a nearby major intersection.

So has any other mobile guys out there encountered this problem? any solution? I'm considering maybe a p.o. box but I don't know if that will suffice for what google is looking for (I don't know if they'll send the verification to a p.o. box since obviously i'm not doing business from that location)

any info appreciated. Thanks...

The way I get around the not shipping to a PO box is to find one of the many places that instead of selling you a po address they just use the bushiness address of the building they are in and they sort the mail when it gets there.

In other words it is a PO box that lists a real address and is very common for just this type of problem.

a friend of mine just mentioned that as a possible solution.

that worked fine for you?

I wonder how much that is...

I'm being told through my web designer (who I'm fortunate enough to be able to ask noob questions like this) that there is a way in google to get around this.

basically you list your home address, then specify you do business at customer's location (which i've already done). there is a small check box which allows you to hide your actual address (pops up in the area you specify what locations you cover - I did not understand what exactly it meant at first) I have not tried this yet, but I will do so and report back for anyone searching about this in the future

i did the postcard thing, then in the options you can hide your actual address. like you stated above^^

you can hide you address, theres a checkbox that says"hide mailing address" and it only shows the town your address is in, also can move the little red marker to where abouts you are located, just set mine up.
