MTM PF22 quick connect question

I am getting a bit of spray from the quick connect on my PF22. I was going to put some water tape on the threads but it also seems like the quick connect is not fully screwing into the fitting. I was wondering for those who use the PF22 and the 1.1mm orifice if the quick connect is expected to screw completely into the fitting? I took a picture of the quick connect and the threads in the cannon in the hopes it illustrates what I am talking about. The quick connect seems to go in only about 4 of the 7/8 threads in before it stops.

Thanks!

Thats as far as mine threads too...it came (heavily) taped from MTM

The quality of that fitting looks very suspect, which is probably why it leaks and only threads in four threads deep. I'd replace it and see if that helps.

Here is a photo a stepped back in case this helps at all.

Funny that you say that...because I'm replacing it as soon as I figure out which one to replace it with. I'm wondering if there's some type of thead incompatibility, which would explain why mine came so heavily taped? Mine doesn't leak, but I don't like the way it attaches to quick connect on the SGS28

Now I will say, I have the same gun and I believe it came with the fitting because I didn't purchase a separate fitting when I ordered it. Mine has never leaked so I don't know. I'll check it to see which fitting I have.

I emailed MTM Hydro to see what they say.

OK, I just checked. I have that same logoed fitting, but mine threads in so that there's only about 1/4" of threads showing. It is also heavily taped although I don't remember if it came that way or I did it. I still suspect that if it won't thread fully and it leaks that there's something wrong with the opening or the fitting.

So I’ll see what MTM says then. It did seem odd that the same quick connect that comes with the cannon doesn’t thread all the way in.

If that is a pipe thread, they are tapered so you will want to use tape or pipe rope. Be careful not to overtighten because you are driving a taper into a taper and it could split the fitting. Sometimes they just won't go in very far but it should seal if you tape the threads.

Thank you all. I got some water piping tape and will try it on my next wash. I’ll report back what I hear from MTM hydro.

The thread tape should help. Definitely don’t want to over torque anything because the cannon head may crack.

Here is what I heard back from MTM Hydro this morning.

Yes, the quick connect supplied is ¼” NPT while the threads of the PF22 is ¼” BSP threads. You will want to remove the fitting, wrap 6-7 times with Teflon and re-install. It will typically only install about 3-4 threads deep, which normal. Do not over tighten as this could strip the brass threads on the PF22 since the Steel plug threads are stronger. This should eliminate the issue.

thats what I thought.....this explains it:

NPT and BSP threads are generally not compatible due to the differences in their thread forms. NPT threads have a 60° included angle and have flattened peaks and valleys; BSP threads have a 55° included angle and have rounded peaks and valleys

Awesome info briarpatch! Thanks for that.

Weird they’d supply a fitting with not-the-right-threads. Wonder what led to their decision to use the BSP threads?

I agree it seems strange with not compatible threads. The stress on the brass would be high.

I also thought that the PF22 was of stainless steel. It's a djungle with the fittings with all of the different threads and sizes and also materials.

The BSP threads on the foam cannon are likely because the units are made in Italy. The quick disconnect is made in China

Just saw this thread. But everything briarpatch says is correct.

Always use Teflon tape on any fitting threads handling pressure.
