At least once a month a customer comes to me with carpeted wheel wells packed with sand and dirt. I have to spend 45-60 mins just power washing before I even start any real work. It’s getting frustrating, and I haven’t found the courage to charge extra for muddy carpeted wells.

Do you guys have any tips on how to manage these? I think next time I will try compressed air to dislodge the sand, I’ll see how that works.

Stick with the power washer method, compressed air could send that stuff everywhere. Charge him $100 extra for the service.

None, I just go right to work with the pwr washer. I have an adjustable end that really helps.

LOL....I'm the muddy wheel well champion..
Solution...a power washer(3000 psi)...turbo tip
And a chair to sit your ass in

Time.....15 minutes a wheel well to do it the right way

Good lord… Just get yourself a Mothers Wheel Well Brush and some Bug & Tar Remover, Degreaser, APC, or whatever you prefer and be done with it in less than 1min.

I'm going to disagree with you man......not a chance

I just did my truck yesterday...15 minutes a wheel well....the fabric is THICK like carpet.
You get mud on it it soaks in like a wet dog and the more you wash it...the more mud keeps coming out.
It is a horrible product, I don't care that it reduces noise...it is a pain in the ass if you get it muddy!

I just went and took these close up pics to show the texture

Do you understand I am talking about carpeted wheel wells?

Do you work from home? I have a zero mud policy, as I work from home. So far only once did a client leave and wash off the mud. But yes charge extra if they come in muddy, But unfortunately there is no way other than power washing them off

As others have said, pressure washer is your best friend. Various tips can help. Personally I don’t tell the customer that I charge extra for that. I just work it into the price of the detail.

Has anyone ever tried spraying somekind of fabric protectant in there when they’re clean in order to make the following time easier?

303 is available in gallons.
ScotchGard is fairly cheap.
Would it make a difference? Is it worth a shot?

Excuse me if that sounds stupid, I don’t normally deal with carpeted wheel wells that get that dirty. The few muddy trucks I occasionally deal with simply have painted or plastic/rubber wheel wells.

I have a test going right now with a product...I'll report back....it's a pie in the sky try.
So far everything I have tried has not made one difference in the ability to speed the process up of thick mud removal

Absolutely a pain. I had a Silverado with those and also live off of a dirt road. 15 minutes each with a power washer sounds correct.

Holy crap what if you sprayed Neverwet on them?! It’s a fabric spray and seems to be cheap enough to give it a whirl?

What brush do you use?

I'm not understanding why someone would use carpet on wheel wheels? Please explain like I'm 5 years old.
