Hey guys, so after a bunch of research and a ton of searching on Craigslist, I've finally taken the plunge and upgraded from my dying '98 Ford Explorer to a 2007 Chevy HHR Panel. - I have to give credit to Josue (mrclean on the forums) as he was inspiring with his HHR Panel and helpful in answering some questions along the way.

I feel like it is the perfect fit for me and my one-man detailing business and I'm totally stoked to go to work in it tomorrow morning! I got it a few days ago, and have been crazy busy with work lately, so just had time today to get a full interior detail done on it (it was pretty clean overall, just not up to my/AG standards) and a quick wash and spray wax. I've told myself I can't do a full correction on it until I sell the Explorer as motivation to get it gone.

Here's some quick pics I took this evening! Sorry, I was in the garage and not the best lighting for pictures, but enough for showing the setup.

The car:

There are no rear seats in the Panel version of the HHR, so tons of space! View from the back hatch:

So I started loading it up; I don't have a water tank, pressure washer or generator, so it makes fitting everything a little easier, but you'll see there is still plenty of room if I decide to add some smaller versions of these.

In the floor where the rear seats would regularly be there's a couple extra storage compartments, since everything sits on these, I decided to put stuff that I rarely use in here, a couple extra buffers, an extra hose, jumper cables, and extra extension cords.

There's a decent amount of space behind the front seats too, so one side I put my regular extension cords, and vacuum and steam cleaner hoses. Other side is duffel bags that hold all those separated dirty towels.

The rear doors don't have handles (you pop them from the dash like a trunk) so to avoid having to open them often, all of my chemicals, pads, and drawers of tools that I go back and forth for are near the back hatch.

From the other side:

I realized my 5-gallon water container (for when I don't have access to water and need enough to do a rinseless wash) fit perfectly behind the steam cleaner, so I tucked that in there and added my 5-gallon buckets with wash stuff, and a container of microfibers.

Finished it with the shop vac on that side, and my leaf blower, Rupes, DA, and bags with a ton more towels on the other side. Here is where you can see I've still got a decent amount of room if I wanted to add more, and could still go a little more vertical too if I wanted to in places.

Thanks for looking, I plan to update this thread as I move along and do a full correction on the exterior and then add my business graphics, but with how busy business has been lately, I can't make any promises on how quickly the rest of that will come together. And I'm completely open to suggestions or comments on any of that as I'm in the very beginning stages of figuring that all out.

Hopefully this helps someone else too that is looking for the right mobile detailing vehicle and doesn't want/need something as big as a full sized van. :dblthumb2:

Hey Jarred.

Thats an awesome set up you have there! :dblthumb2: What a funky looking truck. I've never seen one of those before, we certainly don't get anything like that down here. Looks like there is a heap of room in it. Love the fact its a panel too - great canvas for some signage!

Keep us posted on how its working out for you mate! I like it . . . i like it alot! :props:

We have 3 HHR panels at work, most of which were/are used by salesmen and the mileage varies from 97K to 175K, they run great! Make sure the recall has been done of the ignition switch, ok;)

The color is perfect for drawing attention to your business, the fact that its a panel is perfect for signage as mentioned before. I'm sure the HHR gets waaaay better mpg's than the Exploder got, so your already coming out ahead! One suggestion, replace the stock hubcaps w/ a set of Bonneville Salt Flat wheel covers, usually called racing discs, check it out:

They only cost $95.00 and are REAL easy to clean too and make a visual impact, the "cool factor" can't be denied!

Also, nice ride Jarred! I hope it fulfills your needs and then some!

Thanks for looking and reading all! I love it so far!

Thanks Aaryn, It is a little different, it's kinda a cross between a large hatchback, a wagon, a SUV and a cargo van all mashed into one. The panels definitely will aid it putting some signage on it.

Congrats Jarred! Very cool little ute.

Looks to be very pactical and economical for a one man show.
For a one-man show it seems to be a great fit, could easily have a passenger in it too if I wanted. And it is waaaay more economical that the explorer too!

Thanks for commenting, I'll look into the ignition switch deal, thanks for bringing that up. It was used as an extra car by the previous owner and only has 49,000 miles on it, so I feel like it can be my business car for quite some time. Mileage wise it gets almost double the expolorer (which was about 14MPG and this averages about 26-27.

As for the wheels, I like what I've got as they kinda go with all the other chrome on the vehicle (door handles, mirrors, grill, etc..) plus I've gotta finish paying it off first :props:

You are correct sir, they are solid legit wheels, look like they are chrome plated, but done pretty well and only a couple minor scuffs. I'll probably just stick with them at least for the foreseeable future as they're in really good shape and quite easy to clean.

Nice set up you might want to check out this small shop vac we use it instead of the big ones to save room.

Thanks, I've tried some smaller ones, and just don't like the lack of suction, especially for those dirtier interiors. I just keep going back to the bigger ones. If there were a smaller one that offered similar suction, I could be sold, but the suction rating on that one doesn't seem all that impressive (at least IMO). I agree though, it does seem to take up a lot of the space I have.

First day on the job with the new car and everything went very smoothly. Really really happy with the new car and it's waaaay more fun to drive than the big explorer. It drives like a little hatchback.

It will take some time to get used to no side windows for changing lanes and reversing though...,

Shop vac has a small 5.5hp vac that SUCKS! Beats all my bigger ones

Yeah, it does have a sunroof, something I wasn't really looking for, but was really glad that it came with. Without having any side windows, it does feel a little dark, but the sunroof helps for getting more light inside. It really has everything I could have asked for in a car that I can use for detailing except leather seats (which I may do something about one day) and a a manual transmission :(

Thanks james! Is this the one that you were talking about, or s different one. This looks pretty decent.

Shop-vac #5872462 5gal 5.5hp Wet/dry Vac:Amazon:Home & Kitchen

That's the one it seems, I bought it from lowes and it was blue, some funny reviews on amazon. It's the best sucking vacuum I have, and I've had plenty. It is a bit loud, but I've abused mine, from construction, to water, to dog hair infested suvs, to tile grout. Etc.

Thanks man! I saw that HD has a Rigid model that is very similar too. I just got a water tank to put in the car Portable Generators, Pressure Washers, Power Tools, Welders | Northern Tool + Equipment and once I get it in the car I may need a smaller vacuum, or I'll sinply wait until the one I have gives out (which it probably has roughly 6 months left max on its life. Thanks again.

I got my water tank and it fit close to perfectly in the HHR. With the configuration, I ended up losing out on being able to use the cool little compartments where the back seats would be, but it was the most efficient set-up. I also got a couple of stacking clear drawers from Wal-mart for all my MF towels and pads. Now I just need to get a water pump and pressure washer (probably in the new year) and the inside should be all set.
