My wife gave me M85 and M83

First of all, I offer an apology, because I already posted this on MOL, so I know it is redundant, since I got no response, I write it here. If any moderator sees fit, delete it.


The situation is the following:
My wife, knowing that I like this detail, for Father's Day (I don't know if they celebrate it in Uncle Sam's land), through an online store, she gave me a gallon of M85 and another of M83.
I searched the internet and I already know they are of the diminishing particle type, old stuff as I understand it (correct me if I'm wrong on this). I have also read and watched videos, but all the ones I found are old.


So, I don't want to return it or exchange it, so I don't make her feel bad.
My doubts are:
1- How are they used? Much product? Small?
2- Working time with DA and rotating?
3- Can they be used to cut with Rupes blue foam?
4- Can they be used with the Makita PO5000C, or with a 21 mm long throw?

•If they still perform as advertised on the
various array of automotive paint systems...
-then there’s nothing wrong with “Old School”
products that have diminishing abrasives.

-What Pads? Cutting/Compounding pads
would be my recommendation.

•M83, although it leans more favorably
towards the DA polishers, doesn’t
automatically preclude it from being
used with rotary polishers, IMO.
-What Pads? I recommend Polishing pads.

•Amount of these products to use;

make sure to never ‘dry-buff’.

Yes, I have read that 83 tends to clump when there is wax in the paint, I tested it on paint with ONR and it has not happened to me, 83 with Meg's yellow pad on the Dewalt is a silk.

85 is apparently a friend of the speed in RO, although even in my practice panel I do not go beyond 1400 rpm.
Today I tried it with MF and 21 mm, in the practice panel, I tried the type of priming that is recommended for Meg's DA system and it worked for me, long working time, 3-4 speed, and moderate pressure. I think there is a good chance of seeing light at the end of the tunnel for now.

Like Bob said, the M85 is formulated for use with rotary polishers but you can use it with a DA. Just do a Test Spot first and check your results. I've used this product a LOT since it was first introduced back in the 1980s I think? Kind of a dry product. Maybe add some baby oil if it's getting dusty on you. This is an old M105 trick people use.

2- Working time with DA and rotating?

Don't remember. If the product is drying up and dusting, maybe try adding some baby oil to the product. I've never done this myself, it's a trick a lot of detailers use for M105, which is also known for becoming dry and dusty.

3- Can they be used to cut with Rupes blue foam?

I don't see why not?

4- Can they be used with the Makita PO5000C, or with a 21 mm long throw?

Sure. Compounds don't much care how they are used, the normal issues is working time. Some products dry-up quicker than others. This is why some people add a little baby oil to the product. If memory serves me correctly, baby oil is a water soluble oil. Thus it will mix readily and also extend buffing time and reduce dusting. Might even make wipe-off easier?

Baby oil, they will laugh at the pharmacy when I go shopping, they already do when I go to buy moisturizing paper towels and I tell them it is to remove superficial dirt from the engine and not for a baby haha. I will prove it.
