One of my buddies looked at my recently detailed BMWs on Sunday and asked if I would detail his black Carrera. He said that his Porsche's paint had never looked or felt like the paint on my cars.

I haven't looked at the paint but he mentioned that it is swirled and had always been "Teflon Coated" by the detailing shop that recently went out of business.

I'm really not into 2-3 days of detailing someone else's car for the fun of it. I don't know if this is single stage or clear coated paint. He also just had shoulder surgery so I can't even teach him to correct the paint and polish it out.
  1. Can you recommend an excellent Porsche detailer in the Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village, CA area?
  2. What would they charge for a full correction, engine and interior detail?
  3. Does anyone think that I'm crazy for not wanting to take on the project, even if he pays for product (it might be a way to get some Fusion!), food, beer and wine?
I'm having dinner with him tonight, so it would be great to give him suggestions.

Feed back please

To spend 2-3 days detailing a car for a friend is definitely saying "I love you man" haha I have friends who want me to detail their car and I personally hate doing it. I dont mind if they bring their car over and work on it while im working on my own. I know this isnt an option for you. I hate detailing friends vehicles because I feel bad charging them for my time, I also dont want to bust my a$$ for nothing. If I ever do something like that I have them throw me a few bones for the product Im using and buy me a case of beer (which usually gets drank while Im working on it with them). I guess just weigh the options... and nothing says you have to take 3 days either, maybe use an AIO like megs d151 and walk away. I think that would be worth a case of beer and cost of product.

best of luck,
Jon

So you fully understand why I would like to find him to a good local detailer that will do a proper correction. Besides, I don't do this for a living.

I think that he told me that he paid a couple hundred bucks for the Teflon treatment, but the car never came out looking like my bimmers. I told him to expect in the $500 range for a full detail. Is that too high or low?

Thanks!

As far as how much it will cost I have no clue what your area charges. I know most say they charge roughly between $40-$70 per hr on here depending on who they are and what they do. That is just a rough estimate and there are others that charge more or less. For full correction I doubt he will walk away with it being less than $300 but I dont know again it depends on where he goes to get it done and whats involved.

I know where you're coming from. When I do a freebie it's usually a DD of a friend or relative that's going to see a car wash in the winter. I'm not going to knock myself out for free on a DD that isn't going to get proper care unless I do it. They usually get a 1-step polish or more than likely an AIO.

Price not only depends on what your area commands, it also depends on the car's condition and what level of correction your friend is wiling to pay for. If somebody could get away with a 1-step polish and LSP and the engine bay and interior aren't too bad it could be fairly reasonable.... if he wants or needs some compounding, polish, jeweling, etc, that's going to be steeper.

There's a wealth of SoCal detailers on Forums, I'd be surprised if one of 'em didn't pop up pretty quick. Joe Fernandez of Superior Shine is one guy I would want to be doing the work if it were my car. I think he's down in Orange County. Pretty good hike up to the Thousand Oaks area. I've got no idea how far detailers travel out that way.

I looked at the car last night. It's a '96 4-wheel drive, black turbo, not a '94 Carrera as I thought. It has to be one of my all time favorite cars. The car is in good shape with some paint swirls sadly from taking it to the local hand wash car wash (Yikes!) after his detailer closed his shop.

He really needs a detailer to maintain it properly for him. I would cry if I did 3-days work as a favor, and he took it to the car wash.

Thanks for the reco for Envious, ProMobile and Superior Shine. I'll get his email address and send their web page links to him. I'm sure that he will want someone to come to him as it's about 90 miles to OC. I'm surprised that I haven't heard from anyone more local. ProMobile's web site says that he will travel anywhere, so that may work for Chris.

If you can think of anyone else, let me know. It's been over a year since it was last properly detailed, but it is garaged and only driven 2000-3000 miles per year.
