I'm not sure there's an inexpensive way for the OP to really mute the flake so he doesn't notice it if he wants a polished and waxed car. The only three ways I can think of are repaint (expensive but you choose the color you want), vinyl wrap (not cheap, not expensive, not permanent), let the paint dull from neglect so the flake mutes (that's just crazy talk).
Perhaps think about saving up for a paint job in the future and in the meantime enjoy the paint for what it is and work on detailing techniques on it because it can only benefit you in the future. You might even win awards with it at shows even though the metallic paint isn't your cup of tea. Just some food for thought that might help you get some enjoyment out of it since you love the car in whole.
