I am doing a favor for a friend of mine while he is on deployment. I offered to detail his 07 VW GTI and get it back into shape. Long story short I have a lot of time invested in the car already and I am not satisfied with the result. Not so much the work I am performing but rather how the car still looks. I am frustrated because there is nothing I can do about dents, compromised clear coat and curb rash on all four rims, nick and cuts in the leather and vinyl inside the car, and various hard abrasions and scuff all the the interior plastics that are not even able to be concealed.
Anyone else ever stand back from a detail they have worked very hard on and despite all your hard work the abuse that the car is taken still makes it look like crap?Feed back please

YUP quite a few times. Makes me wonder what the HECK people do in their cars sometimes.

Is this the car that his girl friend has been driving?? Was the car like that when he had it...or was most of the damage done while he's been gone??
There is only so much you can do. Just remember how much better it looks now than when you started. Focus on the positive!

This happens from time to time on cars that arrive a total wreck. I am never completely satisfied until I go back and look at some of the before pictures. And yet the customer is usually blown away at the results.

I've done a ton of cars like that. Kind of sucks the wind from your sails doesn't it?

Never ceases to amaze me how some people treat their car like it's nothing. They're a huge expense, and it's only as good as you take care of it. Granted i'm OCD about my cars and take it to the extreme, like I'm sure most of us are on here, but it amazes he how people just don't care about their car.
I often have people scratching their heads at why I care so much about my current daily driver because it's a lease. I'm like really? I'm paying a lot of money on it and as long as I have it it's mine, I want it looking good. That's no excuse to let it go to hell

Oh my god, thank you for this. I always get asked why I care so much about my car. I like to think of it as an expense I'm caring for, but also because I take pride in the things I do and have. But to answer the OP's question, yes. I have felt the same way a couple of times, but detailing and products can only do so much. As long as I know that I did the best job I could, I'm fine with the turnout.

You could give him the gift of paintless dent repair too...

Yes, this is the car he let his EX girlfriend drive for a majority of the duration he has been gone. I am not 100% sure of the damages that were done prior to his departure. I know she left the car under a pine tree for about a month becuase she said she was driving her boyfriends car. When in all actuality I found out when picking it up it was metal to metal on the brakes, and the car had a huge coolant leak that I took to get repaired for him. removing all the pine needles and sap was ALOT of fun.

PDR, wheel restoration, and leather an vinyl repair.

Such a shame because it is a nice car. He has a bit of $$ in mods in it too. It's quite perky and surprised me when it went into boost. I hope he will be happy with the result. It's not like he is paying me for the detail. This is out of the goodness of my heart.

Maybe you could make a list of things you'd love to do but not love to pay for and hint to his girl that she might want to gift them to him and that you'll handle the legwork :)
