So long story short, I want to get this busines rolling come next year, atleast get my foot in the door with some weekend jobs.

I'm curious about how you folks handle referrals.
I've asked my clients what they would like as a "gift" or reward for providing a referral.

To my surprise, most prefer product over cash.

One of the clients said they would prefer a bottle of detail spray ($15) and/or a buffing towel ($5) instead of $50.00 off their next service if they were to send me a $200+ referral.
I see their point of view, I suppose it would feel better having to receive something from a customer point of view.

How do you guys do it?
For the ones with a larger clientele, do you guys even bother doing it? If so, what do you offer?

I find that a referral "fee or gift" has never brought or lost me a customer. I'm thinking you should do an either or if you feel the need. Give them a choice of either a product or a $25 credit towards their next service. ($50) is too much!) Keep in mind, a credit on their next service with you will bring you more profit! A free product may actually take business away from you.

I give $20 off ther next detail and just mark it down on their account so I remember who gave the referral.

I give them money off, usually $20 depending on what they get.

I believe I read it here.

Offer 10% off their next detail and the new client gets 10% off too.

This works since most likely they will be friends.

Plus, you get a new client and secured another job with your previous one.

I've been thinking about doing this. Once I kill this last stack of 250 business cards I'm ordering another 1000 but I'm going to put all my contact info on the front and turn the back into a coupon where it will say "First timers get 10% off any single service with this coupon" and under it will have a line for the referrals name and will say in smaller print "Write your name here and give it to a friend. When they schedule their detail with me, you'll get 20% off!" Anyone else do this?

Here is my current business cards. Once these are out I need to add my website to the next batch.

And I usually give a few cards to people after doing their car.

I LIKE that. I am not a fan of xx% off with referrals. But if done right it can make sense. In this way, you are giving a constant reminder of it and marketing it. Not just that, but you're using some very well designed cards. So it's not a shoddy looking attempt. :props:

A simple Thank You!! Maybe next time you do their car do something extra at no charge. Most people don't want anything and are just happy to spread the word.
