Hey guys, I am new here at AutoGeek. I am a member of lots of different car forums for the various cars I have/do own. I have always worked on modding my cars and tried to keep them clean and tiddy but decided that this summer I would take the next step trying to keep them looking perfect.

For now I would just like to know some good products people can reccomend to start off with, maybe a good car wash soap, basic polishes, waxes and some good interior and plastic products. I do not have a power detailing tools yet but I would also like to know what a good unit would be to start with for waxing, polishing etc. Thanks. Erik!

Welcome to AGO!!

The Blackfire line is excellent. For a beginner to machines, the PC or Griot's is where I would start.

I don't think you can go wrong with Optimum, Black Fire or Ultima products. Also, Detailers Pro is excellent. For a beginner machine, I would recommend the Griot's.

Hello Erik,

This is "the" place to learn some of the finest ways to detail your car. There is a wealth of knowledge here for the beginner to the most advanced. A simple question is all that's needed to initiate helpful responses from members here and also Autogeek Professional Staff.

This is something I've posed several times and it covers many areas at a high level but give you an idea of what's available and some of the prices.

Everyone starts off as a beginner but with some reading, questions, and trial, error, and practice you'll be amazed how much you'll be able to do. After reading and understanding some of the basics, the more hands on your are the quicker you'll build your knowledge and gain experience.

This link contains articles written by Mike Phillips and has allot of great reading within.

Basic steps in order are:

  • Wash
  • Clay
  • Paint Correction & Polish
  • Seal
  • Wax
In order to improve the consistency in your work think seriously about adding a dual action polisher to your arsenal... Stick with the 5 1/2" diameter pads on the Porter Cable 7424 style of polisher and you'll be amazed at how much more efficient correcting and polishing will be.

Paint Correction and Polish

I prefer to put my own package together.

Here's some great information that will help you if you need it.

Welcome to the family, I been using Wolfgang (WF) and Blackfire (BF) and love them both. Have a Griots as well for my DA. Happy hunting. FYI BobbyG is the man. He's like a jedi as with many others here :xyxthumbs:

Thanks guys! Those articles were exactly what I was looking for! Greatly appreciated!

I get lots of emails from others on the car boards I am on and the marine boards with "tell me what to buy!" and I write back and say "have you read the articles at autogeek?"

and they say "no" - and I say "read them and then come find me...."

I swear, ADD is in the water supply these days - many just looking for the magic bottle of lotion that will make their car shine like the ones here with any skill or tools.......I read for a week here before I bought really anything...it was much easier....

Hi Erik,

Welcome to Autogeek Online! :welcome:

I type the below so much but it's only meant to help...

When you have questions about products or procedures, start a "Dedicated Thread" in one of the appropriate forums.

Asking for help in Intro forum will limit you to answers by the people that do most of the welcoming on this forum not that that's a bad thing but starting a dedicated thread with a title that tells everyone what you want is a heck of a lot more effective.

A tip to help yourself get great answers when you start a thread

How to write a good title for your thread

If you reply to the below thread I add you to the list... makes talking to one another easier...

Roll Call - What's your real first name?
