New Shop Hourly or Commission

I will be opening my new shop in about 3 weeks, and we have had several discussions regarding hiring employees, retention and benefits. Because I do not have a guaranteed number of cars coming through I have to start out with hourly based wages, but I have been told that its best to offer a commission based structure. I have been unable to find any information about what is fair, reasonable or customary.

I would love to see more dialogue coming from brick and mortar shop owners.
