For those star wars experts, can ssomeone explain the " new" Return of the Jedi?

Is it a remake of the ooriginal or am I missing the " big " picture?

How many star wars films are there now?

Im way behind or just old or both.
Thanks Steve

Seriously?!

It's not a remake, The Last Jedi is Episode VIII.

The first Star Wars movie released was - Episode IV - A New Hope - 1977

The next one (sequel) was - Episode V - Empire Strikes Back - 1980

The next one (sequel) was - Episode VI - Return of the Jedi - 1983

After those 3 movies, there was a long break, about 16 years until the next one came out.

The next one (prequel) was - Episode I - Phantom Menace - 1999 - this movie started the series from the beginning.

The next one was - Episode II - Attack of the Clones - 2002

The next one was - Episode III - Revenge of the Sith - 2005

There was another long break, about 10 years. George Lucas was the originator of the first 6 movies and then I think he retired.

The next one was - Episode VII - The Force Awakens - 2015

The next one was - Rogue One which fit in between Episode III and IV to fill in a gap - 2016

The next one was - Episode VIII - The Last Jedi - 2017 - just came out.

I may have missed something. I'm not really a super fan as some but I like them and find them interesting. Maybe some other Star Wars fans will chime in.

Well Disney bought the franchise and will milk it for all it's worth, pumping out movies. I'm going today in 2 hours and on a day where the Bears don't play, cars are clean, having leftovers for dinner I'm looking forward to seeing it. As I get older I'm really disinterested in Hollywood but I still follow SW as it brings back memories of me being a kid of 7 when New Hope came out.
The Last Jedi is a progression of the franchise and takes place after the Empire has fallen (i.e. Darts Vader era)

It's pretty good. Alot of twists I didn't see coming. A little similar to return of the Jedi but it is what it is

Thanks for the patience and clarification.

It's not officially a remake. It's supposed to be a new entry in the serie taking place about 30 years after the first original trilogy. BUT they recycled pretty much every scene except 3 or 4 from The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

The movie is well made, actors are great, and the visual is really good... but it's very infuriating to me to see scene after scene taken almost directly from previous movies. They did the same thing for The Force Awakens, but not as bad as in this movie.

So if you are not a Star Wars fan, you will very likelly enjoy this movie very much. If you are a Star Wars fan you will either love it or hate it. I am in the second camp and give it a 4/10 because of the ridiculous stealing from the other movies.

Yeah the last two were fairly disappointing and seemed to follow the originals in film and in order. Sad.
