Hello.

Brief history:

I've detailed my cars for years and considered myself average with knowledge and ability. Have used an orbital with what I thought was the ultimate success. That's until today I detailed my wife's recently purchased used SUV. I was not happy the first day she brought it home, it had swirls and scuffs all over it.
What do you want for used? I guess my expectations were quite high. I've seen dark cars for years with swirls and chalked it up to inexperienced detailers using high speed buffers. I was under the impression once it gets that way, it's toast and couldn't be repaired. I dug out the old orbital and found I couldn't get a new pad since it's relatively old. I set out to do my research. I found this site.

I purchased the PC 7424XP, 5" backer, 6.5" LC Black Pad, and Meguiars Ultimate Liquid Wax. It was discussed to go easy and not get an aggressive pad or compound when you only have so much paint and clear coat. It couldn't hurt just waxing it with the DA polisher at 3 and see what it gets me.

I'm a believer to say the least. The swirls are no longer visible nor the scuffs. There are still some stray marks (scratches) visible with a light and some bird stain. But all in all I consider it a beautiful job and I'm no longer fretting over the quality/condition of paint nor the previous detail job done on it.

All recommendations welcome on what other products (wax,polish,pads..) I should use to minimize/fix the remaining scratches and get a deeper shine.

Thanks again for a great site and resource.

Great story about your re-introduction to modern detailing.

Since you're using Meguiar's Ultimate Liquid Wax I'd suggest getting the other two complimentary products,

Ultimate Compound

Ultimage Polish

Both work great with a PC

Also consider getting smaller, thinner pads, they'll rotate better so you can do better work faster.

Either Meguiar's foam discs or Lake Country 5.5" flat pads.

See these two articles....

NEW! Meguiar’s Foam Buffing Discs

Both the LC and the new Megs foam discs are thin compared to most other pads and this helps to maintain pad rotation which is key to remove swirls and scratches with a PC or any knock-off of the PC

I'd also recommend a copy of my book...

Thanks Mike for the tips. I'll try the thinner pads and the products you suggest.

I've always enjoyed detailing my cars.

I marked the back plate with a sharpie and noticed as I applied more pressure it was rotating less.

I looked at it with the sun going down and could see where I could improve and cleanup the side molding.

Thanks for the videos, they helped a lot with how much pressure to apply and passes. This feels like more of an art and the quest to get the ultimate detail.
