I am a physician (anesthesiologist) with a love for a shiny car. I am a novice to all of the new technology for auto detailing. I see it is more than wax on/wax off. My first question is this; what is the difference b/w the types of polishers, buffers, etc. I always used a random orbit type. could someone explain the difference to me? Thanks

First welcome. Here is a link that explains an orbital with a how to video.

Dual Action Orbital Polisher Guide: how to remove swirls, scratches, & oxidation with an orbital buffer. Porter Cable 7424, foam pads, backing plate,

I think you'll probably see topics on a Dual Action (DA) or a rotary machine. A rotary just spins around and doesn't orbit. It's more effective for correcting but also not as forgiving when it comes to over heating paint.

If those don't cover what you're looking for, you might have better luck being a little more specific in what you're trying to accomplish or if you have specific types of machines you're looking for advice on.

Welcome. You should be able to find the info you need here.

Like frosty suggested - post up your expectations, and what kind of car you have and you are likely to get better responses.

Welcome to Autogeek Online! :welcome:

Just to note, it's usually best to "Introduce Yourself" in an Introduction forum group to let everyone know you've officially crossed over from Lurker to Active Member. Maybe tell us little bit about yourself, where you live, what you drive or what projects you're working on etc.

Then if you have product or process questions, look through the different forum group categories and try to pick one that the topic matches your questions and then start a dedicated thread for your specific questions

Clicking the below link will take you to the list of different categories or groups of forums identified by their title.

Autogeek Online Forum Topical Groups

Or you can simply post your questions is the Detailing 101 forum which is a catch-all forum for any kind of question.

Auto Detailing 101

If everyone who joins posts their questions to the "Introduce Yourself" forum group then we could get rid of all the other groups and just have one group called,

Introductions and Everything Else.

This is in no way intended to be hard any of our new members, I'm just sharing how a discussion forum works. Autogeek is in this for the long run and it helps to have some kind of order or method to the madness as it relates to keeping this forum organized.

So introduce yourself in this forum and post your questions to either Detailing 101 or one of the topic specific forum groups.

Thank you!

While it's best to start a dedicated thread in one of the other forum groups for topical questions, here's a brand new article I'm working on that will discuss the primary differences.

TOB = Traditional Orbital Buffer aka The Wax Spreader

The thread is closed to posting till I get it finished but I"m guessing the polisher you've always used looks somewhat like the one I have my hand on in the picture?
