Hi mi name is Nathan I currently reside in Battle Creek, MI and currently own a 2002 z28 and 1971 demon. I have for the past few years taken care of my cars using Meguiars 3 step process in paint cleaner, polish, and wax but have never used clay bar or used machine buffer at all. I am currently unemployed so i have plenty of free time to detail and would like to learn how to do it on a more serious level to possibly find work detailing at a shop or open my own.
Anyways the equipment I have right now is of course many microfiber towels of different varieties, chamois, ultimate wash, ultimate compound, ultimate polish, meguiars #7 and ultimate wax a vector polisher with makita backing plate and 1 w8000 and 1 w9000 pad hoping to get many more but hard to choose which ones and size and etc... so many to choose from.
I look forward to detailing both the Camaro, Demon in next couple weeks. my cousin is letting me practice on her 90 lumina to see if i can restore the paint if not she plans to repaint it anyways . I have read Mike Phillips article on restoring single paint and look forward to trying that out on both the Lumina and Demon.
I am however worried with no rotary let alone not even DA polishing experience of something going wrong. Plus right now I am trying to salvage what is left of the original paint on the Demon after I took it to a Detailer last year who never even washed or clayed the car went straight at with buffer. I wish there was a way i could tell I can save what is there and if its even safe to take buffer to it.
Lumina has 2 year old repaint and is heavily oxidized I am thinking wash, clay meguiars cutting pad or what ever pads you suggest, using #80/83 followed with #7 on polishing and or finishing pad, and #26 wax
The Camaro i am thinking i can wash, clay bar, use 105 on 8000 2005 on 9000 and seal with nxt
Anyways here are some photos of the cars trying to find good shot where you can see the yellow appears dull and faded.
Now the Camaros paint does not look that bad really, car only has 58k miles and you can see minor scratches and swirls...the bad part is I had to drive it in the winter with 315/35/17 tires and the inevitable happened and there is cracking and scratching in paint where i hit reflector pole i know i can not take out with buffer
